Football FanCast columnist Alex
Dimond looks at the proposed expansion of the Euro Championship and is clearly
not a fan.
So, the 13th European Championships are finally concluded,
and to everyone's satisfaction now that Spain have been crowned champions.
Deserved winners (and how often can that
be said?) the Spaniards ended a staggering 44 years of hurt. So, by that
reckoning, England should be nailed on for the 2010 World Cup. Well, one can
dream...
Football FanCast columnist Alex
Dimond hopes that the appointment of Paul Ince could pave the way for other
clubs to scour the lower leagues in search of their future managers.
So, Paul Ince is the
new Blackburn Rovers manager. The media have been falling over themselves to
celebrate his appointment, noting he is the first black Briton to manage a
Premier League team. Much like US Presidential candidate Barack Obama, ‘the
Guv'nor' is being credited with breaking down more than a few glass ceilings.

FanCast columnist Alex
Dimond looks at both
Manchester City and Chelsea's proposed move for Ronaldinho and feels that such
a transfer will pay for itself.
The former President of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez,
had a saying - "The most expensive players
are also the cheapest." It became something of a motto for the club
throughout his tenure, as the club pursued its infamous ‘galactico' policy. The premise was simple - while big players cost
big money, the outlay would be more than recouped by the commercial benefits
such marquee names brought.
Football FanCast columnist Alex
Dimond looks at the remarkable story of Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic and
cites that as the reason he will be supporting Slaven Bilic's men in the
Euro's.
The commercialisation
of football has had many widespread effects. It has permitted clubs to bring in
players from all corners of the globe, at unprecedented cost, to see them strut
their stuff in front of not only their home crowds, but also TV audiences thousands
of miles of way. Football, and particularly the Premiership, has become a truly
global game - bringing unimaginable wealth to those involved. But such change
has not been a universally good thing.
Football FanCast columnist Alex
Dimond feels
that Rafa Benitez is approaching a crossroads in his Liverpool career.
In terms of tradition,
stature and support, Liverpool FC is among the biggest clubs in the world. The
club is steeped in history and silverware, at a level only a handful of clubs
throughout the world can contend with. The club has long led the way in English
football, and has been at the forefront of the cosmopolitan transformation the
sport has witnessed in the recent times. To that extent, it is surprising to
learn that the Anfield club's new £7million signing, Andrea Dossena, will
become the first Italian international to play for the red half of Merseyside
in its 116 year history.
Football FanCast
columnist Alex Dimond has scoured
Europe to find a crop of players that could light up the Premier League and has
found talents that should certainly be of interest of a Spurs or Arsenal.
With England's
premature exit from Euro 2008 leaving many column inches to be filled, the
footballing media have been falling over themselves to get the exclusive
stories on all the top club's transfer dealings. The future of Cristiano
Ronaldo has dominated headlines, and the arrival of players like Samir Nasri,
Luka Modric and Jose Bosingwa has highlighted the determination of top teams to
spend big and gain ground on their rivals. FootballFancast reveals a few of the
players that English teams might be taking a serious look at, but are not yet
attracting widespread media coverage.
