Myers mulls over the latest rumours and rumblings
It is slowing becoming the worst kept secret in football that
Spurs are courting the services of Blackburn's David Bentley. Rumours have been
around for weeks that the winger is well within the radar of manager Juande
Ramos, as he looks to continue his revolution at Spurs which has already
included the acquisitions of Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos.
There is no question that if the rumours proved correct then David Bentley will be an excellent signing. I know opinion has been mixed among supporters as to his worth, whether he is overrated or not, but I see a player who has high energy, skilful and an extremely gifted distributor of a football. He is dare I say a stereotypical Tottenham player; although I'm sure he won't possess the laziness that has gripped many before him.
One bone of contention among supporters in the pro/con Bentley debate was whether he was worth the £10-15m that has been quoted for him, or if he was any better than Aaron Lennon. I was interested to see the Daily Mirror this morning who suggested that the new Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince was keen to include the Spurs winger in a part/cash exchange deal for David Bentley - a package that weighs extremely heavy in Blackburn's favour in my opinion.
I like Aaron Lennon and whilst he has not had the best of seasons is still more than capable. You don't become a poor player overnight and especially when you are 20 yrs old and I feel it would be a huge faux pas, if he was to be sacrificed in such a deal.
One of the things that has always been evident at Tottenham over the years, is the lack of impact substitutes at the club who can make a difference or change the game in a moment of brilliance. Lennon certainly possesses that ability and should Bentley arrive at the club, then what better than having someone like Lennon as an understudy - in fact I think a route of the problem of the players decline is that he got complacent due to lack of competition at the club.
So how do Spurs fans feel about the proposed exchange and more importantly, should Aaron Lennon's services be retained?
