Myers reports on the daily rumours and rumblings
If there is one thing you can guarantee at Tottenham this
season is that they have one of the most obliging of defences. A lack of
leadership, poor organisation and goalkeeping errors have all been cited as
reasons but, it's clear that Senor Ramos feels it is very much personnel. The
Spaniard made his feelings clear in the January window by bringing four
defenders in, it's clear he still thinks he may be slightly short.
The reservations about Ledley King and will he or won't he
get back to full fitness are well documented and it's completely
understandable. On a personal level I feel it's an absolute travesty that
England as well as Spurs have been deprived of who would be the finest centre
half this country has produced in a long time. Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul
and Didier Zokora have all tried to come and replace King alongside the
excellent Woodgate and to be fair have all seemingly failed to provide that
solid foundation that the Spaniard and Spurs fans crave. Is it time to cash in
on Dawson and the reported unhappy Younes Kaboul?
This morning papers have linked Spurs, this time two
defenders in the shape of Getafe's Daniel Diaz and Chelsea's Tal Ben Haim. I would
be lying to you if I could offer you an appraisal on the Argentinean's
abilities but unfortunately I can't. The former Bolton man I can and for me definitely
a signing Spurs should entertain. He is a player of excellent ability, and who
has been massively underused at Stamford Bridge.
A lot of people will look on at Bolton Wanderers woes this season and put it firmly down to Sam Allardyce. You ask a Bolton fan and they will also point the finger at Ben Haim. He has every attribute you would want in a centre back, pace, strong in the tackle and his reading of the game is of the highest order. His distribution isn't in the same league of a Woodgate or King, but he would prove the perfect foil and bring some much needed discipline to the back line.
Ben Haim has made it perfectly clear that he is disgruntled at Chelsea due to his relationship with Avram Grant and a transfer in the summer would prove likely. I can't help feel that Spurs will have to move early to secure their man, given Grant's uncertain future. Do Spurs fans feel that Ben Haim is the right compliment for Woodgate in the heart of the defence? Should Ramos persevere with Michael Dawson? Would fans prefer to see the capture of Diaz or should they be setting their sights somewhere else?
