Will 'Bos' succeed where so many other starlets at Spurs have failed?

Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings

If there is one thing that tickled me this morning then it is the thought of a 16yr old suggesting that he needs to leave Crystal Palace, as playing for the highly experienced Neil Warnock's style doesn't suit him. You got to hand it to John Bostock, he obviously doesn't lack confidence and you would have loved to be a fly in the wall of Warnock's office when he was told the news.

There is no doubt the likely capture of Bostock is a major coup for Spurs as the player has bags of potential. It will be the first time since Owen Price that Spurs have taken advantage of the ruling for 16yr olds and are likely to get him for close to nothing when it goes to an eventual tribunal. Crystal Palace can hope for a region of £5m but in truth it always tended to be a mere fraction of that.

So should John Bostock join the ranks at White Hart Lane he will be the latest of a series of supposed wonder kids, who have joined the club in the past few years, and you do wonder whether he will be the first to break the mould and make an impact. Devitte, Taarabt, Pekhart and Danny Rose have all previously joined the club with big reputations and yet neither has made any significant strides in the first team, let alone the squad. Is this down to their ability or is it merely club policy?

It has been a real mystery as to why none of them were given an opportunity in the last few weeks of the season, especially Rose who has been superb in reserve outings and you also wonder why Spurs have been reluctant to send them out on loan to gain valuable first team experience - are Spurs merely being overprotective?

So how do Spurs fans feel about the imminent arrival of Bostock? Is it a positive move and a real sign of intent for the future? Do you feel that Spurs should maybe change tact and start blooding their youngsters a lot sooner? Will Bostock be the the first to succeed where the other supposed wonderkids have failed?

Bostock is a cracking player
Bostock is a cracking player and would be a great signing for us. Personally I dont understand why we dont send our youth players out to Championship sides when they are around 17-18 to get more 1st team experience. I think were too protective and we dont need to be. The major clubs all do it where they send their youngesters to other clubs to learn about real competitive football and get them used to playing week in week out. If they cant cut it at that level then get rid of them if they can then after the loan start blooding them into the 1st team and see how they do. At this point if they can make it then bring them in slowly without too much pressure on them and let them fight for their place. Ramos at Sevilla brought through 3 youth members from the Sevilla squad and hopefully he will take advantage of our current youth players as well. Look what a good job hes done with O'Hara in half a season. He looks a great propect and I really want him to do this with others like Pekhart, Rose, Taarabt and Gunter.

Take a look at the academy
Take a look at the academy side, they've been all over the world this year to play in tournaments against elite opposition where they've been more than equal to virtually all of their opponents. I do think reserve team football has become a little bit obsolete in the modern English game and is predominantly an exercise in match fitness/sharpness with more and more promising players seem jumping from academies into first team football with any gap in between being used as reason to loan out to lower league sides to gain competitive experience(Man Utd & Arsenal being the best examples). Bostock will do well at Spurs and he is only just 16 years old, don't forget we've also got Dean Parrett who was signed from QPR for a reported £2m at the age of 16 and we've not seen him yet. I think we'll see a more continental approach to youth football from Spurs, and hopefully it'll be one that we'll all benefit from in the years to come.

Be nice if clubs like spurs
Be nice if clubs like spurs think that another teams academy player is worth extracting from the club at 16, that they paid somewhere remotely close to that clubs valuation of the player. This arrogant behaviour disgusts me. How long will it be before Spurs chew up Bostock and spit him out the way they did Routledge. Lets face it. Spurs clearly dont have an academy of their own worthy of the name and prefer to leech on clubs like Palace.

Well Spurs prefer to let the
Well Spurs prefer to let the lower league clubs do all the work in producing the player, and then steal them for virtually nothing. Sums up the arrogant attitude of the most expensive clubs in the Premiership. I can't remember the last time spurs produced anyone decent from their own academy. Still, was pleasing to see them get that Champions league spot they were predicting for themselves before this season. I'm disappointed the boy didnt choose 1st team football above the money.

Get with the programme
Get with the programme chaps; there is a food chain in football, and while Spurs are near the top, the likes of Palace and QPR are down feasting with the bacteria. Thems are the facts - end of discussion. No young player worth his salt wants to stay at some pisspot club if he's attracting attention of a major club like Tottenham Hotspur - don't be silly! Yeah you'd love him to stay at Palace - course you would - but he's a footballer wanting a decent career, who gives a monkies about what you lot want? How the hell have Spurs' young prospects "failed" anyway?? Lennon, Carrick, Huddlestone, Dawson: all young, English and were given the chance to get into our 1st team. Dervitte broke his bloody leg and was out for over 9mths - this happened just after he made his 1st team debut for us too. Pekhart was/is only 17/18 - and, again, he suffered a pretty nasty injury this campaign. As for Danny Rose? Come on - get serious will you. The kid is barely past his 16th birthday for crying out loud. What should Spurs do - play a team of 15yo's or something? Don't be so f*cking stupid. And as for Taarabt - he's been given a chance to make his place in the team, but he doesn't seem to have the talent to do it. That aint our bloody fault - he's just not good enough. Ripping it up for the reserves don't mean sh!t sunshine - different kettle of fish when it comes to 1st team football. But it's okay coz I don't actually give a damn where our young footballers come from. We've got just a bit more to play for than to boast about having an academy or not (PMFSL!) Who gives a sh!t - money talks these days, and we're able to attract the creme of the crop. That's all that matters. If Palace or QPR were ever in our position, they'd be doing the exact same thing - so, please, don't insult our intelligence. Poor, badly researched piece of 'journalism' I'm afraid. Whatever you do, don't submit this stink for your GCSE English son.

"real fans, real opinions",
"real fans, real opinions", you claim - yet you moderate 'opinions' so that only the ones that agree with you appear? Pathetic.

Bostock rates himself and
Bostock rates himself and his family as a Palace supporters. Personally, I think he has given them a massive kick in the teeth. They brought him along in their acadamy since the age of seven. Neil Warnock gave him a taste of first team football at 15 and this is the thanks he gives them. WHY didn't he sign up for them, get some first team football under his belt and then if he felt the need to move on, he could, leaving Palace with some sort of return for what they have done for him. He will, in my opinion, end up in Spurs reserve team, or outed on loan. The trouble is nowadays it's all down to money. His agent pushing him down the money trail and him ending up the same as all the English youngsters do, competing with the foreigners in the Premiership and getting nowhere.

Badly researched? Does this
Badly researched? Does this moron not realise that Dawson was from Notts Forrest not Spurs? Did you not pay a ridiculous sum for him, at a young age only for the fans to be calling for his head this summer? Does this guy not remember what you did to Wayne Routledge who Simon Jordan gave the same warning as Bostock? The only reason Bostock is going is because he got an agent 12 weeks ago, who happens to be the same agent at Theo Walcotts!! The agent is after quick money, and that includes a transfer fee (walcott me 10 weeks after signing with him Bostock 12) so trust me spurs you'll pay through your teeth for Bostock (but sadly he'll still be worth it) and John you'll pay for it by wasting your next two years. This fools comments on football food chains shows the lack of understanding for football in general. i want a game where newcastle can be in league three then nearly win the title 5 years later, i want a game where norwich and leeds can be in eurpoe and down two years later.... not a game with four big teams.... and a bunch of comedians like spurs spending every penny under the sun, raping and pillaging their neighbours, just so that can try and squeeze into eurpoes mickey mouse cup through the fair play league. boro at home, bolton at home.... read the signs another barren year looms at the lane, and the booing started ten minutes after your cup win, when you went down 3-1 to chelsea!! Bostock be warned, these are thickle fans, with little respect for players, clubs, the culture or the game... a bunch of rich kids used to being spoilt who throw their toys out of their prams at the lane because success just isn't what spurs is about over the past 20 years!! ENJOY YOUR 55 POINTS FOR £1500 THIS YEAR!!

"...I can't remember the
"...I can't remember the last time spurs produced anyone decent from their own academy..." Jamie O'Hara, Ledley King, Stephen Carr. Troy Archibald-Henville made the bemch this year a couple of times I think. Spurs tend to send their youngsters out as they are approaching the end of their acadamy contracts, hence the spells spent out on loan by the likes of O'Hara, Charlie Daniels and Andy Barchan (both at Leyton Orient). I can understand the fans of these clubs getting frustrated, but spurs arent the only club that look to pinch youngsters. There was that famous tapping up episode involving Chelsea and Leeds about three years ago. Big clubs are going to want the best young players in order to try and secure their futures. Look at it this way, if the roles of Spurs and Palace were reversed, Palace would have done the same thing, I would be making your comments and you would be making mine.
