Football FanCast columnist Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings
There must come a time as a manager when you have to say
enough is enough, move on and find a different alternative. Such has been the
war of attrition that are the prospective transfers of both Gareth Barry and James
Milner that you could forgive Rafa Benitez for sticking two fingers up at those
who accuse the Spaniard, among others of infiltrating our game with foreigners,
and look elsewhere - can you blame him?
I mean Gareth Barry is an excellent footballer, but £20m?
James Milner has stuck in some half decent performances for Newcastle, but £9m+
Pennant? Even David Bentley's price has been muted at around £18m - where do
clubs get off on this and how do they reach their valuations? I know the
transfer window is otherwise known as the silly season, but this is really
taking the biscuit.
I was intrigued to see this morning that Rafa has supposedly been having a little rethink and he may now look to move his funds elsewhere and has reportedly (Daily Mirror) targeted Valencia and Spain sensation David Silva - a player who has great versatility and can certainly solve the grey areas that exist in the Liverpool midfield, notably the flanks.
In all honesty it seems the perfect solution and it begs the question, why it was never considered before and at a reported £20m - kind of puts the Barry fee into perspective, especially as the Spaniard is some 6yrs his junior and dare I say possesses greater abilities. You also wonder with Rafa blowing a large chunk of his budget on Silva that it is likely that plans to offload Xabi Alonso will be scrapped and the popular midfielder will stay at the club to fill the central role alongside Javier Mascherano.
How do Liverpool fans feel about a move for David Silva? Should Rafa pull the plug on the Barry and Milner deals? Would you like to see Rafa bring all three in?
