The £20m quandary that the Spurs board may face

Tagged: Tottenham

Football FanCast columnist Hans Schmitz looks at the possible £20m quandary that could be facing the Spurs board.

I'm sure there are set to be a few butterflies in the stomach among the Spurs faithful this afternoon, as the club look to turn around a dismal week in Krakow. On paper it is by no means an easy tie, as Barcelona found to their cost a few weeks ago, and you can't help feel that should Tottenham lose this afternoon, then even more anarchy is going to rise among the natives. Many see this game as a defining moment for Juande Ramos; I just wonder if the board share this view.

Juande has been in extremely bullish mood this week and feels confident that he is able to prove his doubters wrong. Six, 1st team wins since the Carling Cup victory suggests that Ramos has to start getting his finger out fast and start proving to be the World class manager that we all believed he was - I know he was badly let down in the transfer market in the summer, but personally I still believe there is enough quality in the squad for us to being a damn sight better.

No matter what we think as fans at the end of the day the buck will stop with the Spurs board, who will only be too aware of what the consequences will be if we lose this afternoon. I am certain they are just as nervous and concerned at recent results and what they are getting from one of the highest paid managers in football. They will be acutely aware of the reaction of the supporters, should we lose, but they also have to weigh up the financial implications if they were to dispose of Ramos and his services, which could be in the region of £20m mark - It is one hell of a quandary that faces the board and you do wonder what will be their call.

So how long will the Spurs board carry on with results as they are before they say enough is enough? Twenty odd million is one hell of a hit to take, but it would be nothing compared to the unthinkable of going down - it really is a tough dilemma that the board are potentially faced with and let's hope for everyone's sakes that Ramos can turn it around - I don't think I could take more upheaval.

I think the board will wait until the end of October, they owe him a few more weeks.

As you rightly point out, it
As you rightly point out, it is a small price compared to relegation and that is where we could be going if we don't sort things out.

It's clear that Comolli and
It's clear that Comolli and Levy won't sack Ramos, no matter how bad his results (and his current return of 1.24 points per game is even worse than Christian Gross' 1.31). Because they went so far out on a limb to hire Ramos, sacking Jol against the wishes of the supporters, destabilising the club and effectively staking their reputations on the appointment, surely if they sack Ramos, they will have to go themselves. The only thing that could pave the way for a new manager at Spurs is the currently rumoured takeover.

don't make me laugh,
don't make me laugh, starting rumours already. We know he has failed to live up to expectations, but look what has happened with the Geordies. Stability is key and no surprise that the top 4 excluding Chelsea do so well with the same manager. Ramos hasn't become a bad manager in less than a year. The board and the players have let him down. A win tonight is crucial and another 3 on the trot in the league to give the team confidence. Slowly I can see the players starting to gel together and a result against Pompey would have been great. Would have liked to have seen Bent start and I think Huddlestone is not given a decent run. His long balls and playing just behind the attack could be just what we need. Come on you Spurs

THE GROUP OF PLAYERS AND THE
THE GROUP OF PLAYERS AND THE MANAGER RAMOS ARE CAPABLE OF TURNING THIS AROUND.I FORCAST A DESENT CUP RUN OR EVEN A WIN AND A MIDTABLE FINISH ONCE THESES PLAYERS GEL IF NOONE LEAVES A FEW DECENT SIGNINGS IN JAN IT WILL BE INTRESTING BECAUSE PAST THE INITIAL SHELL SHOCK ,UNCERTAINTY AND EXPERIMENTING,PLUS THE FACT THAT PRESS WILL ALWAYS PUT MORE PRESSURE ON SPURS PLAYERS AND COACHS OVER TEAMS LIKE EVERTON OR VILLA)THE PLAYERS WILL ONLY GET BETTER THEIR ALL TOO TALENTED TO GO DOWN,AND AS TIME GOES ON THEY WILL REALISE THAT.NEXT SEASON WILL DEF BE A BETTER ONE.

What ramos should do!!

We need: Two proven
We need: Two proven strikers! -Pav is too slow and gets pushed off the ball too much. -Bent cant play a loan striker the way ramos has set the team up as he is useless at holding the ball up on his own. -Dos santos needs to be told to pass instead of running into defenders whilst trying to take them on an then losing the ball! -Campbell is young an in-experienced but prob looks the best striker we have at the moment! A centre back -Kings one game on one off is a downfall of ours. -Dawson is not good enough an is of championship quality -Corluka may play centre back but is rather slow and with woody who also doesnt have much pace i believe we need someone a bit faster! -Once hutton is back he offers us so much more as he can cross and work the wings -Assou is not first choice so bale must play here, unless we buy a new left back and play bale on the left of midfield. A defensive Midfielder -Zokora cant pass nor shoot, so we would imagine he is our defensive mid, however he gives away far too many freekicks in dangerous areas and bad times in the game. -Hudd has the passing ability but does not have the pace to play here. -O'hara gives it his all but he is better off on the left wing where he gives us pace and a left foot capable of crossing. Other points: Its either Jenas or Modric. Modric is a link up between the two front men at the moment he is being played far too defensively, we will only see the best of him when he is given the freedom to push forward. Jenas is supposed to be a box to box player, but he always seems to be in the wrong area of the pitch at the wrong time. He lose's the ball alot of the time and does not get forward or in the box enough. On the wing Lennon offers us pace and is getting better at his final product. Bentley offers us a crossing ability from the right an also a goal scoring threat! Also playing a loan striker an tinkering with the team is not working..so play 4-4-2 which all players are used to! So here is how i see the team should line up untill we buy what we need! Gomes Hutton-King-Woodgate-Bale Bentley-Modric-Zokora-O'hara Lennon-Pav/Campbell 4-4-2 Here we have pace on the wings in O'hara. Modric can link up play an support what he does best, zokora staying defensive. Bentley's crossing ability from the right into the height of pav or campbell. We have attacking fullbacks in Hutton and Bale who can also switch with bentley an o'hara on the wings. King and woodgate hold the fort at the back and we have lennons pace upfront to get in behind defenders, put balls into pav or campbell and to hopefully win plenty of freekicks for the likes of bentley, o'hara and bale to put in. We also have players like bent, dos santos, jenas and corluka on the bench to come on if needed.

Lone...... Apart from that -
Lone...... Apart from that - oh and the fact that O'Hara has no pace - and Jenas and Woodgate seem to be the only 2 players with any heart.. an absolutely cracking analysis. Welcome to Hull

I thought the 'loan' striker
I thought the 'loan' striker was Campbell?! Seriously, we will get it together sooner rather than later. Ramos is juggling with the players to see who works best together and in what competition (Carling Cup, League and UEFA, presently). Based upon that knowledge, plus Ramos' cup abilities, reckon we will have a great shot at the FA Cup. Give it time. It will happen for this team. Would still ove to see Riqueleme in the midfield though. Would make the new signings around him and in front of him look world class.

I'm delighted to see so many
I'm delighted to see so many Spurs fans being faithful to Ramos. I think that he could prove to be one of the most important managers in our history. Let's have a bit of blind faith for a while and repay him for what he did for us last season. Comolli is the wrong man, overloading the midfield and not really touching the defence or forwards, two positions which needed strengthening. Ramos can indeed work with a DOF, but not an incompetent one. Anyone going to the Lane on Sunday, let's present Hull with a united side who love their club and believe in the manager. COYS
