Spurs fall victim to a blatant case of double standards

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey feels that Spurs have fallen victim to blatant double standards

Man United have their sights set of Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov after Sir Alex Ferguson publically declared interest in the striker who scored 23 goals for Spurs last season. However, is Ferguson now practicing the very same lack of transfer etiquette that has infuriated him in his dealings with Real Madrid?

Ramos has been bracing himself for a bid of this magnitude after offering coy answers to questions regarding the Bulgarian's future all summer. With Milan and Barca, who have both been linked with Berbatov, spending big it is unlikely that United face any real opposition in their quest to sign the out-and-out striker they have been missing since Ruud Van Nistelrooy's departure to Madrid.

The real question that needs answering here, however, is the matter relating to Ferguson's double standards regarding transfer conduct.

"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," Ferguson told The Sun.

"Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack."

So why can Man United publically declare their interest in other team's players, yet when the same happens to one of their own they report the matter to FIFA? Is this just a case of double standards when it comes to the biggest clubs in the game? It is second time in weeks that Spurs have been on the wrong end of a public declaration and you certainly wonder whether the club will be looking to lodge a complaint; it is getting beyond a joke.

Ramos has been bracing himself for a bid of this magnitude after offering coy answers to questions regarding the Bulgarian's future all summer. If Ferguson does get his man, should Spurs be holding out for more than the £22m reportedly offered, or should the Spurs board cash in and move on?

Fergie is getting worried

Fergie is getting worried now Barca have expresed an interest, he just wants to keep the player informed that hes wanted there.

if it is the case that an

if it is the case that an official bid has been made then they are perfectly in their right to say so to the media....the ronaldo incident is different as until now there have been no reports of an official bid

It is such a shame that the

It is such a shame that the FA dont intervene, Spurs, Villa, we are getting done over every time.

No it isn't the same. At

No it isn't the same. At all. United have made a firm bid to Spurs, only then has Fergie commented. Real have had no contact with United, they use 'Marca' as a mouthpiece, get the player's head turned, get him to say he wants to go there, then they offer a pathetic amount for a player, knowing that the selling club are screwed as the player only wants to play for Madrid. I don't think Spurs can complain about 18 million for Carrick for example, at least you guys get good market value. We, on the other hand, got 20 million for Beckham, he made Madrid 80 million in his 1st season.

United have made an official

United have made an official bid through the official channels that's how it's supposed to be done. Real Madrid have never submitted a bid - just used Marca to destabilize the player. Why's that double standards?

It makes me laugh, I hope

It makes me laugh, I hope Real Madrid (a much bigger club) come in and take Ronaldo and Berbatov! I know Tottenham have virtually no chance of keeping Berbatov happy but it would stick in Fergie's throat if that were to happen. It is double standards and i've been saying it all summer! All it comes down to is United and Ferguson think they because they can bully the clubs smaller than them around and when a bigger club like Real, Barca or either Milan club come and do it to them, they don't like it at all. I hate Ferguson and hope he gets nut cancer

Reading the same report in

Reading the same report in other papers and sites Fergie NEVER actually names the player during the interview. This is just another example of how sh*t The Sun newspaper is at reporting the truth. Bunch of mugs! Regardless, as United have made an official bid for Berbatov this is completed different to Calderon's gushing about Ronaldo. At least United can afford the player if they meet the fee Spurs want!

any one with half a brain

any one with half a brain know the obvious difference between the 2 cases. Apparently, the so called "columnist" doesn't even have half a brain. sad case.

Come on TonyG, the bid only

Come on TonyG, the bid only arrived last week, United have been fueling this in the media for months now and Liverpool with Barry? absolute disgrace! We should form an alliegance with Villa and other clubs being victims of this. Ban any publication of anything about the clubs and threaten to take the papers to court if they pring anything regarding our clubs in future, positive or negative
