Spurs' £14m remedy for their striking headache

Spurs' £14m remedy for their striking headache

Davis Lowe feels that Spurs have the £14m remedy for their striking headache

There is an old saying that you “should appreciate what you have got, rather than dwell on what you haven’t.” I’m not sure a phrase was ever intended for football use, but you do sense that Spurs should certainly take note, especially when it comes to their strike force.

The Spurs sites and forums have been full of doom and gloom since Monday, with everyone critical of the clubs failure to bring in another striker. While there is certainly room for criticism and the board themselves have been honest and open about their disappointment, let’s not forget the wealth of talent that is already present in North London; notably the £14m arrival of Roman Pavlyuchenko.

While everyone was huffing and puffing about what could have been on Monday, Spurs had already closed the deal for the Russian International. Had it not been for the Robinho or Berbatov deals, then this signing will certainly have taken on a greater significance and rightly so; Pavlyuchenko is one of the best strikers in Europe at present and his goals certainly eclipse those of his more illustrious international teammate Andrei Arshavin. Strong in the air, great touch and a scorer of all types of goals, Spurs have a superb striker on their hands and its time that fans started to realise it.

The Russian is going to be an absolute handful and with the likes of Bent alongside him or Dos Santos in behind, then Spurs are not going to be short of goals this season; especially with the array of midfield talent around them.

Agree we should remember

Agree we should remember that we have a top class striker and him and Bent could cause havoc next season.

Looks a top player but my

Looks a top player but my only concern is that nobody from Russian or the old Soviet Union has ever done well in the English game, Rebrov and Sheva anyone?

Deano J, have you written

Deano J, have you written off this season already then?!?!

And when he gets injured we

And when he gets injured we have precisely.... well that answers that and in europe we have precisely.... ah same answer..... a void that should have been filled some time ago and please dont say the answer is the championship player that we had to borrow as we couldnt get our act together is the solution.. no doubting Pav's quality but untried in prem and lets wait and see if the prem league is his stage

Maybe like many others of us

Maybe like many others of us ......

fellow Spurs fans, if you

fellow Spurs fans, if you think we are in dire straights regarding our striking options, can I just say feckin wise up!! We have one of the best strikers in Europe in Pavlyuchenko and another with a point to prove in Bent. With the support of Dos Santos, Modric, Bentley and the like I believe we are a force to be reckoned with this term.

Its so refreshing to read a

Its so refreshing to read a positive article. I think that if Spurs supporters we asked which 3 things we need they would have said a new goalie, more creativity from midfield and a left winger. Gomes, Modric, Bentley, Dos Santos. It is also evident that we need a midfield enforcer but hey we have players that can play in that position. I think well struggle for the first couple of months then we will show what this team is made of. My only concern is if Pav will run out of steam because by the end of the season he would have played 14months of competitive football which is a lot.

Don't want to tempt fate,

Don't want to tempt fate, but Rebrov was also a prolific goal scorer in partnership with Shevcenko. However, on his own, he was mediocre. Not buying Arshavin was the bungle of the season for Spurs. One without the other was asking for trouble as Pav will find it difficult to adjust.Prediction: Once he eventually starts scoring goals, he will be sold to a top 4 club. Levy is a disgrace and those who cannot see this are as deluded as he is about top 4 spot. We had our chance and blew it. We will never come that close again until the Board sell up and let some one invest proper money in the club.

I'd like to believe we are a

I'd like to believe we are a force to be reckoned with but evidence of Board room bungles, selling our best players and not replacing them makes believing very difficult.

That's absolute rubbish

That's absolute rubbish Camel with the hump. Levy has invested heavily in the club and has brought in a top manager. The loss of Berbatov and Keane is a big loss but it's not in the interest of the club to keep players that don't want to play for us. We might not make the top 4 this season but with the ambition that Levy is showing, we will eventually.
