Football FanCast columnist Hans Schmitz feels that Steed is the one man who should survive the
cull
When it was announced that Sunderland were preparing
a £23m swoop on four Tottenham players; I was intrigued to find out the
quartet. Whilst I can accept the possible sales of Tainio, Kaboul and
Chimbonda; the thought of Steed Malbranque being sold on, was certainly one
that had me confused.
There is no question in my mind that the Frenchman was Spurs' outstanding performer alongside Robbie Keane. In his first full season and being played out of position, he displayed excellent consistency and never delivered anything less than 100%. He was the one player who refused to accept the season was over after the Carling Cup final and his contributions are always greatly appreciated by the Spurs faithful.
I find it a grave shame that Malbranque has never given the opportunity of playing in his natural role in the centre of midfield, especially when you consider how poor they were last season. It is like he has been typecast as a left midfielder and his role in the side is nothing else. With Ramos bringing in Dos Santos and actively pursuing Diego Capel, it is clear that the Spaniard is deeming Malbranque surplus to requirements and will look likely to move on at the right price.
I personally feel that Steed has more than earned his spurs and cannot understand why the club are considering letting a player of his ability leave. I really feel that Ramos made something of a faux pas when he refused to experiment with him in a centre or right midfield role. I can understand that Juande is looking to add greater quality to the team, and that I accept, but surely Steed will prove understudy across the midfield. You know what you get with the Frenchman and he will never let you down when called upon - Ramos is not known for making mistakes, but I really believe he will if he let's Steed go.
