Is it simply 'Monte Carlo or bust' for Spurs?

Tagged: Tottenham

Football FanCast columnist Jake Walters feels Spurs face an important 48hrs that could define season.

As the big guns of football descend on Monaco with both the Champions League and UEFA Cup draws set to take place, you get the distinct impression that it won't be the only bit of business that will be resolved. With the transfer window set to shut in a mere 72hrs time and many squads still in need of improving; surely Monte Carlo will be the scene of the biggest transfer activity of the summer window.

There is no question that Spurs will be at the centre of most activity as the club are in the market for at least three new players. Damien Comolli arrives in Monaco this afternoon with a simple brief for this trip. Acquire the services of Andrei Arshavin or Jan Huntelaar and drive the hardest of bargains, to get the full asking price for Dimitar Berbatov.

I'm sure this won't be the only negotiations that will be taking place between our Sporting Director and officials from other clubs around Europe. Juande Ramos has already hinted at the start of the week, in what he hopes to have added to the squad, but the ball is now very firmly in Comolli and the board's court to actually deliver; something they really should have done weeks ago.

I know a lot of Spurs fans who have mixed views about our start to the season. Some refuse to panic, while others look at the deficiencies within the squad and cannot see how we can improve unless these are resolved. I agree with the latter and feel that unless Comolli is successful in the next 48hrs in bringing in the desired players, then we are in for a season much the same as last. Failure could see a flood of panic buys come Monday, a situation we should have never found ourselves in.

So do Spurs fans think that Comolli will deliver for us in the next couple of days or is he likely to screw it up? I firmly believe it is a defining moment in his tenure at Tottenham and failure to bring in the required names, must see a parting of the ways. Going into the season unprepared has left not only fans but Ramos rightly frustrated, I feel this is the last chance to redeem himself otherwise it will be au revoir.

Important that we get
Important that we get Arshavin and I think there is also a case to bring in Huntelaar as well, we need four top strikers.

As long as he comes back
As long as he comes back with a holding midfielder and centre half then I will be delighted, but agree the jury is still out on whether Comolli is the right man for the job - compare him to Arnesen and the way he use to conduct business.

We need at least 6 players
We need at least 6 players if we are even to break into the top 6 this season! I would like to see us get Corluka, Veloso, Capel, Arshavin, Huntelaar and Pavlyuchenko but thats gonna cost 100m so it won't happen. I say we just prepare ourslves for yet another season of the disappointment we are all used to. Ps, Commoli is inept. He must still be on the Arse payroll as nobody can possible be as useless at scouting players as him!

Guys, it concerns me that
Guys, it concerns me that people are all too ready to criticize Comolli, Ramos and Berbatoss without recognising that the mess we are in is down to Levy. Its so simple, you wait until the market is about to close for your bargains. Football is a different business, you recognise your strengths and weaknesses. Build on your strengths and address your weaknesses.Unless Levy knows something that we dont( very rare considering his recent behaviour), it is very likely that the club will fail to bring in the right players. If they do, they'll already be cup tied (Corluka), or we are 9 points behind the leaders in addition to new players having to settle in. I hope I am wrong but I can only go on past evidence of how Levy has dealt with similiar matters in the past. Don't expect any additional mid fielders.

We haven't been Ok since
We haven't been Ok since Arnesen and Carrick left. Ramos wasn't the answer and Jol wasn't the problem. Comolli can only redeem himself if he returns with a minimum of Velosso, Corluka and Arshavin, and even then he should never have left Ramos exposed like this.

I agree that we need to
I agree that we need to bring in some more players. I think that most important is Corluka, Veloso and either Huntelaar or Arshavin. With Pavluchenko already on his way give or take 1 visa. All the any other players would be luxuries at the moment and we need defensive cover and an extra striker more than anything. I have faith that they will deliver at least two players, I just hope that they are Veloso and Corluka more than anyone else!

I really do not know if
I really do not know if comolli is any good or not because trying to sign the right players at the right price must be very difficult we also have the disadvantage of not being in the champions league and are not prepared to pay the wages some of these players demand what disappoints me most is the lack of young players coming into the team it must be worth a try giving Perkhart a run out if only from the subs bench(I know is now on loan) and maybe some others I know the thought is they are not yet ready but giving them a chance might be the making of them apart from that if we get another forward and holding midfielder at least we could be alright.

i wanna see Arshavin and a
i wanna see Arshavin and a stealy defensive player join the squad. one things for sure though, we need to cash in on berbatov. i appreciate that we are trying to hold out for a good price but we are testing the patience of a side that wins everything without him. why would they pay over the odds. i get worried when we play financial hardball as a non sale would be disastrous. Carrick was different as not selling would have just meant a classy midfielder still in the team. Berb's presence is casting a shadow over the club. sign the russian, sell the sulk

What is over the odds?
What is over the odds? Seriously, people keep banging on about Utd paying "over the odds", Utd spent £32m on Tevez and he's not a patch on Berba, so why the fcuking problem with stumping up the money for a player many believe to be one of the best strikers in the prem? ManU would gladly fork over money to a bunch of criminals like MSI for the 'ownership' of Tevez, yet choke on the idea they might be swelling the coffers of another premier league club.

comolli should go. We need a
comolli should go. We need a top striker and a defensive midfielder like barry or nolan and a center back. The squad is unbalanced, Capel at sevilla would have been good buy but now he is not essential. Id like to see podolski hunltlear or arsharvin. Corluka would be ok.
