Football FanCast columnist Jake Walters feels Spurs face an important 48hrs that could define season.
As the big guns of football descend on Monaco with
both the Champions League and UEFA Cup draws set to take place, you get the
distinct impression that it won't be the only bit of business that will be
resolved. With the transfer window set to shut in a mere 72hrs time and many
squads still in need of improving; surely Monte Carlo will be the scene of the biggest
transfer activity of the summer window.
There is no question that Spurs will be at the centre of most activity as the club are in the market for at least three new players. Damien Comolli arrives in Monaco this afternoon with a simple brief for this trip. Acquire the services of Andrei Arshavin or Jan Huntelaar and drive the hardest of bargains, to get the full asking price for Dimitar Berbatov.
I'm sure this won't be the only negotiations that will be taking place between our Sporting Director and officials from other clubs around Europe. Juande Ramos has already hinted at the start of the week, in what he hopes to have added to the squad, but the ball is now very firmly in Comolli and the board's court to actually deliver; something they really should have done weeks ago.
I know a lot of Spurs fans who have mixed views about our start to the season. Some refuse to panic, while others look at the deficiencies within the squad and cannot see how we can improve unless these are resolved. I agree with the latter and feel that unless Comolli is successful in the next 48hrs in bringing in the desired players, then we are in for a season much the same as last. Failure could see a flood of panic buys come Monday, a situation we should have never found ourselves in.
So do Spurs fans think that Comolli will deliver for us in the next couple of days or is he likely to screw it up? I firmly believe it is a defining moment in his tenure at Tottenham and failure to bring in the required names, must see a parting of the ways. Going into the season unprepared has left not only fans but Ramos rightly frustrated, I feel this is the last chance to redeem himself otherwise it will be au revoir.
