FFC columnist Greg Farrimond is not convinced about Wigan's strikeforce and wonders if their misfiring will cost Wigan dear in the battle to stay in the Premier League.

Wigan Athletic seem to have their defence sorted out, have some very promising midfielders yet our strikers seem to be really letting us down.

Last year we stayed up due to a mixture of luck and Emile Heskey. This year it will be neither of these factors. The big man just doesn't seem to be the same player since his foot injury. The game against Derby was frustrating for him as he just seemed to be a yard behind the ball all the time. I just hope he is back to his best soon as for what he did last season for this club, he is a Wigan Athletic legend.

The rest of our strikers are simply not good enough. Marcus Bent had a run where he was banging in every shot, now he can't hit a barn door. I usually reserve judgement on new signings but Marlon King really hasn't lived up to expectations. I had such high hopes for the lad but he just doesn't seem to have the quality to cut it in the Premier League. Antoine Sibierski blows hot and cold like a tap. He is either fantastic and a breath of fresh air or sluggish and lazy. His recent comments in the press has endeared himself to the Wigan faithful but he needs to prove this commitment on the pitch. I don't even want to comment on Julius Aghahowa.

Personally I would start King and Sibierski. King needs to prove himself and deserves his chance and Sibierski is the only one of our Strikers who can create a moment of genius from nowhere, his goals against Derby and Chelsea proved this and he is long overdue a run in the first team.

I have been very impressed with our midfield this year though. Wilson Palacios has been nothing short of a revelation. Alex McLeish must be kicking himself. I want to take this opportunity to thank Arsene Wenger for alerting Steve Bruce. Unfortunatey, I think Wilsons days at the Latics won't last too long. He will have clubs queuing up for him in the January window next year, that's assuming he stays in the summer!

Luis Antonio Valencia is getting better with every game. When he matures he will be a very fine midfielder. He is adapting to the english game very well and has the strength most right wingers don't.

Lets give King a chance - he needs more time and feel and Heskey can be a potent threat.

Since his arrival, King
Since his arrival, King hasn't offered anything different than Bent already did. In fact Bent looks more willing to chase everything down. Sibieski is a frustrating player to watch. One minute volleying in quality goals (Chelsea FA Cup) the next scuffing shots wide (countless matches). Heskey looks a yard off the pace and needs to start regularly finishing 90 minutes. I still think we'll have enough to stay up, but that's more down to this season probably endnig with a record low survival points total.
