columnist Rob Facey reacts to Dave Whelan's comments regarding the state of the Premier League
and wonders if the Wigan chairman has a point when it comes to defending the
number of foreign players in the country.
Following on from Sir David Richards comments that the
Premier League has contributed to the downfall of the national team has been
met with criticism from Premier League chairmen, most prominently Wigan's Dave
Whelan. But who is in the right?
Richards' views are in stark contrast to Premier League
chief executive Richard Scudamore who claims that there is no link between the
scarceness of English players in the Premier League and the team's failure to
qualify to Euro 2008.
"I don't think he's fit to be the chairman of the Premier League and what he has said goes against the Premier League," Whelan told The Guardian.
"It is very unfair what he is saying. He knows the problems we have."
"We have to import foreign players because we haven't got the youngsters coming through. But that goes in phases. Football is not a rolling production line."
Whelan did have words of advice for youngsters in the future, stating:
"They shouldn't sign for the big boys. They should sign for local clubs."
Is Whelan right? Should youngsters be encouraged to join smaller, local clubs rather than following the bright lights of London, Liverpool or Manchester?
Were David Richards comments out of order or has he just stated the blindingly obvious? What is the answer to solve the discrepancy between domestic power yet failure on the national level?
