Football FanCast
columnist Rob Facey thinks that Spurs' hunt for a striker would
be made a lot easier once they get some decision from the player as to where
his future will lie.
Gus Poyet, the Tottenham assistant manager, may still be
trying to convince the fans that the club can hold onto their Bulgarian
superstar, but the writing seems to be on the wall for Berbatov's Spurs career.
"Hand on heart, I don't know what is going to
happen with Berba," Poyet
told The Guardian.
"People have to understand that we want Berba at the club and, if he stays, it will be phenomenal. But if he goes, we will need a replacement.
"We will have to wait. At the moment there have been no offers."
Though selling the striker would upset many of the White Hart Lane faithful, an effective use of the cash would appease them, especially if they are able to bring in a world class replacement.
However, Cruzeiro has made public the fact that Spurs are chasing their Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno, but have stated that "the proposal was well short of what we expected."
This means that Spurs' summer plans are totally dependent on Berbatov's future and it is ludicrous that they still hold any hope on retaining the striker who is in danger of ruining what could be a great season of improvement for the North Londoners.
The longer he stays the more it looks like he is bleeding the club dry, wasting valuable resources on a player who has not come out and stated his intended plans for the future. Is it not time that Spurs put their foot down and set a deadline for the player to make a decision? How can Ramos possibly expect to begin his rebuild with all this uncertainty? If David Villa and Samuel Eto'o are reported targets, then there certainly won't be a shortage of takers, so Spurs need to get in their early.
As a neutral looking in I find it incredible that this situation is occurring. One player is not bigger than a football club and is it not time, that Spurs flexed their muscles in order to get a decision from the Bulgarian?
