Southampton PodJockey Matt Brennan feels that Adam Lallana has great potential, but doesn't feel he is
worth £5m at this moment in time.
With finance the way it is at St Marys, it is inevitable
that players will have to be sold. Adam Lallana is the latest starlet to
attract the interest of the Premier League and despite Fulham expressing an
interest in the player in the summer; it has now emerged that Spurs could well
be favourites to land the £5m rated youngster in January.
Undoubtedly this interest is well earned. Adam has probably
been our best player to date this year and has a huge potential. Now Spurs fans
probably know next to nothing about the guy and what kind of player would they
be expecting for £5 million pounds? Personally I do not think he is worth it at
this moment in time.
Adam is a bright, intelligent young player. He makes the right runs, his passing is to a high standard and when it comes to finishing he has shown he is more than capable. Over the summer he certainly seems to have matured and possibly "beefed" up slightly from his previous small figure, (maybe it's his new skinhead haircut adding that effect) however he is not the biggest of players and I think that in the Premier League he may well prove lightweight as there are too many strong defenders who would just push him aside at the moment. His lightweight figure is certainly something that needs to be addressed, especially if he is to make his name in the Premier League.
Unfortunately for me and other Saints fans though is that we have to accept that if this lad keeps up his level of performances then he will have to move on. A few million will keep the bank happy and ultimately keep us ticking over. Avoiding the dreaded "A" word is imperative.
The strange thing about this situation is how far we allow the threat of administration to dictate our transfer policy. Selling our best players to starve off administration is surely not the best option and surely only increase our chances of further relegation. We have a paper thin squad and if 4 or 5 players leave, and with no money to buy any decent replacements, we will be relegated. It's a false economy. Keep the bank happy by selling a few of our youngsters - but then have no quality players left to win any games.
A question for everyone though - have the club learnt from
previous wrong doings? We let Leon Best and Martin Cranie go for peanuts, as the
transfer fee was decided through a tribunal. They were out of contract and
unfortunately we lost them for a fraction of their real value. Recently though,
we have seen both Lallana and McGoldrick signing 3 year deals. The question
remains as to whether these contracts was just an agreement between club and
player, so that the Saints can benefit from considerable bids, oppose to
letting them go for next to nothing; surely the least the club deserves for the
club that brought them to this level.
