Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey assesses which Premier League clubs would benefit from signing Portsmouth Lassana Diarra after Harry Redknapp admitted he would be unable to stand in his way should an offer come in for the FA Cup winner.
Much has been made of Arsene Wenger's transfer policy at the Emirates, but his decision to let Lassana Diarra leave the club in January may be a decision he lives to regret.
Diarra, the outstanding performer in Saturday's FA Cup win, was a bargain buy at £5.5m when he moved to Portsmouth midway through the season after Harry Redknapp beat Juande Ramos to the French international's signature.
However, Diarra has always been honest in his views that he saw joining Portsmouth as a way of breaking into the top band of European clubs, something manager Harry Redknapp is well aware of.
"Diarra is a fantastic player and one day he will get his wish to play for one of the top clubs," Redknapp told The Telegraph.
"He deserves that and I understand his ambition but here he is getting games."
However, as Redknapp hints, Diarra's situation is a strange one.
The fact that he was integral to Portsmouth's success could see him remain at the club for another season, not least because the club are in the UEFA Cup, but also as he is seen as indispensible and will play where he may be used in rotation at other clubs. The other curiosity is who would be prepared to pay big money to take him on?
Bearing in mind his inability to break into either the Chelsea or Arsenal squads prior to his starting role at Portsmouth, it seems unlikely that either will be bidding, especially when you account for the fact that his transfer fee would be highly inflated at the moment. Wenger is short on industrious midfielders and Gunners fans must be wondering why the club let him go in the first place only for the matter to be intensified by the departure of Flamini. But has the two London clubs reluctance to give him a chance, put off other top European clubs?
Spurs and Newcastle are said to be in hot pursuit and the midfielders talents, who would certainly be welcomed at both clubs, but I wonder if a move to the North East or back to London would represent the step up that the player obviously is in demand of? Spurs can only offer the player Uefa Cup football, which he will be getting at Portsmouth anyway and Newcastle of course are in the process of rebuild under Kevin Keegan, so you do wonder if the player will be better off where he is.
What is the likely move for Diarra in the summer? Would signing for Spurs or Newcastle represent the step up that the player requires? Should the Frenchman bide his time and hope one of Europe's big guns come calling? Or should he simply stay at Portsmouth?
