Time for clubs to follow Spurs' lead and form a cartel
Posted by: Davis Lowe , on Sat 19 Jul 2008

Football FanCast columnist Davis Lowe applauds the Spurs chairman for making a stand and feels that other clubs should follow suit.

I don't think there was a football supporter around who didn't echo the sentiments of Daniel Levy last night. The callus way in which football clubs continue to ride roughshod over rules and regulations is getting beyond a joke and you only hope the FA or Premier League make a stand and make an example of these teams - then who knows, the game might just get some sort of normality return.

I'm sure the Man United fans out there will rightly point the finger at the way they have been treated and will merely shrug their shoulders, but surely if Sir Alex Ferguson had any morals, given what happened to his football club, then he wouldn't have made such a public approach. The stupid thing about this whole scenario that if they had followed the correct protocol, then the chances are a deal would have been struck. Spurs are acutely aware that their star striker favours a move away and announced that if a right fee came in then they will allow him to leave, however all Fergie has done with his outburst is now put a massive obstacle in the way, definitely put the price up and Spurs would certainly be looking to do business elsewhere.

Levy deserves great credit in the way he is challenging this underhand practice head on. It is a grave shame that his fellow chairman haven't deemed to follow suit in the past, but I wonder if it is time that they united and formed some sort of cartel - you kind of feel that the Premier League would have to take note if 8 or 9 teams were to lay down their own ultimatums and demand decisive action is taken, to quell this underhand practice that has reached new depths this summer.

Will the Premier League do about these rule breaks or will both Manchester United and Liverpool be given a mere slap on the wrist? Would a cartel of club chairmen issuing their own threats to the Premier League force their hand and make them take decisive action, or are we just going to have accept that it is just part of the game?
