columnist Rob Facey wonders which of the Big Four has the
attacking strength to emerge victorious from a long season in the Premier League?
Now that all of the big teams in Europe are getting into the
swing of things it is a sensible time to asses how the Big Four shape up in the
final third of the pitch, potentially where this years title will be won or
lost.
While Arsenal and Chelsea spent the summer trying to hang on
to their strikers, Liverpool and Man United spent theirs trying to find the
final piece in their jigsaw.
With most teams on the continent and now in England favouring playing one up front, particularly away from home, or as part of a 4-3-3 formation, getting the right man for the job is key and is why such huge sums of money have changed hands in recent months.
So who exactly is the best equipped to sustain a prolonged title challenge? Who has the best strike force?
Despite sitting atop of the Premier League, Chelsea look a different side without the attacking threat of Didier Drogba. His injury sustained in the week will cause another headache for Scolari as Anelka still embodies a Gallic shrug as he saunters around the pitch. Goals from Ballack and Lampard will counteract his lost but without the attacking focal point, will the Stamford Bridge side go off the boil?
Can Kalou fill the void? Perhaps they should have wrapped up that Robinho move prior to deadline day after all.
At Anfield, Robbie Keane finally got off the mark this week and will be desperate to score his first Premier League goal for the Reds at the weekend. For Rafa Benitez's men, however, goals have never been a problem since the signing of Fernando Torres, with Il Nino scoring a bucket load.
Recent centurion Steven Gerrard, Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt always chip in with important goals, but an injury to Torres could hinder the Reds title challenge.
If Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor can stay fit for Arsenal it will cause defenders problems all day long at the Emirates and, along with the constant probing of Samir Nasri and the pace of Theo Walcott, Arsene Wenger's side could be the dark horses for the title.
If Eduardo could return from his horrific injury this season then that would add an extra dimension that the club were unable to enjoy in the final few months of last season.
And at Old Trafford, Dimitar Berbatov finally got off the mark in Europe this week despite still looking out of sorts in the Premier League.
Rooney has finally found his scoring boots after months in the wilderness and it is only a matter of time before Cristiano Ronaldo starts to bother the scorers on a more regular basis. Paul Scholes, although injured, remains a threat as does Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez. It could be argued that Sir Alex Ferguson currently holds the best hand, certainly strongest and the deepest.
So who is best equipped for the long haul? Which of the big four has the attacking prowess to win the Premier League this season?
