Arsenal, Spurs and Aston Villa have to accept it's now part of the game!

Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone feels that it is time that clubs accept that ‘tapping up' is just part of the game.

Tapping up of players is something that has been going on for years. Whether it is done through an elicit meeting, player orchestrated or openly within the media; it is something that will always continue and really something that the authorities can do little to stop.

It is fair to say that it has become more prevalent in the passing years and I believe that has a lot to do with the increase pressure that the modern day manager finds himself under; where the days of building a team are numbered and the need of instant results a necessity. No longer are coaches allowed to nurture players and allow them to grow, they need the finish product and will look to obtain him by any means possible.

I fully understand where Daniel Levy is coming from and felt he is right to report Liverpool and Manchester United to the Premier League. I have taken no great pleasure in seeing the actions of my club Liverpool and the underhand we have gone about our approach to both Villa and Spurs in search of their star players. It is certainly not the way we use to conduct business as a football club, but at the same time I really believe it is a case now that if you can't beat them then join them.

While Manchester United and Liverpool are bearing the brunt of much criticism, maybe they should remember that both these perpetrators have been victims of such underhand policy. When Harry Redknapp comes out and talks of his wish to sign Peter Crouch, his admiration for Shaun Wright-Phillips or would sign Spurs' Younes Kaboul if the price is right; very little is said - why is Harry is exempt from such criticism?

Both Liverpool and Manchester United can give you lists as long as your arm of players who have been illegally approached. When Manchester United rightly protested to FIFA about the way Real Madrid were courting Cristiano Ronaldo; it was merely dismissed as part of the game and that was a feeling that was echoed by UEFA President Michel Platini. If the main footballing authorities can see no wrong in it, then why should Sir Alex Ferguson or Rafa Benitez lose any sleep in making their transfer targets known?

While Spurs, Arsenal and Aston Villa's of this world can rightly feel aggrieved at the actions of certain football clubs, both here and in Europe, they now have to accept it is part of the game. Why I respect the fact that these football clubs continue to operate in a morally correct manner, the sad truth is that none of the football authorities give a damn and probably the worst that will happen with this Premier League complaint, is that the football clubs will just get a measly fine. The day's when the beautiful game had rules and moral guidelines ended years ago and that it is something that we just have to accept.

It shouldnt be accepted as

It shouldnt be accepted as part of the game. It is breaking every single moral in football and has to be wiped out.

If Fifa and uefa allow it

If Fifa and uefa allow it then the PL arent going to go against the grain and make a stand.

this is wrong because real

this is wrong because real never offered any money were has utd left 20 million on the table and fergie exspects to have is man when he comes back from hols in africa

this is playing right into

this is playing right into platini and blatters hands because utd made a show of blatter and is friend will try to inplement is ruling that no team that is in dept can play in the champs league that rules liverskint and morgage utd out 800 million for utd and 600millon and rising liverpool why should teams that are dept ridden should be allowed to buy succses

If it allows to continue

If it allows to continue then it will be the start of the end, who would want to watch Manu or Chelsea win win win apart from their fans. Needs to be changed, make it like the USA system.

This is just shrewd Levy

This is just shrewd Levy working his magic. By publicly coming out he's, at the least, lifted Berbatov's price tag. Furthermore, the next manager will think very hard before trying to unsettle any more Spurs players and hopefully we can turn Keane's mind around to help us next season. Smart move.

It's fine to make comments

It's fine to make comments on players that are on transfer lists. They are basically saying that "yeah, that guys for sale but the offer we would give (or gave) is too low" etc. But when players AREN'T on a transfer list (Berba, Keane, Ronaldo) it is breaking the rules. Leaking stories to the press, or even just coming out to the press directly, is a blatant attempt to unsettle a player and get them on sale. EVEN IF ManU tabled an offer if the player isn't for sale it should be kept secret at least. Otherwise they may as well place an offer of £1 to "guage the waters". It just shouldn't be allowed, it's that simple! COYS

The writer of this article

The writer of this article pretends that he's neutral about allowing tapping up until he states he's a Liverscum fan. Of course it all makes sense now, lets break the rules that govern football. In fact lets take it a step further and ram raid a shop, no need to worry it's normal stuff now... Jerome you are a [*@!$]. As for everyone else, take no solace from this writer, he thinks he can help his club get players on the cheap by confusing you into agreeing with him....

Its only the top four who

Its only the top four who are like that, maybe because there's more pressure on them to succeed, not fail. The rest of us in the same league, play by the Rules. Old 'arry is a good example of good old fashion Brinksmanship, nothing wrong with that!! Its the NO meaning YES to your clubs thats against the rules, the clubs Permission was not forthcoming Yet mu and livpl still contacted both players and agents. Fraud springs to mind as well as little things like Rules!!I hope neither player gets his WISH and that SPURS GO MARCHING ON!!

This is honestly THE worst

This is honestly THE worst and most ridiculous football article I have ever read on the internet. Ever. Accept it as part of the game?!! Nice idea. How about we also accept career-ending tackles (two feet from behind), striking opponents in the face and the occasional fielding of 12-14 players when it takes a team's fancy? Racist chants too? They're 'part of the game' aren't they? Why not have the good, old days when Cyril Regis or John Barnes had banana skins thrown on the pitch at them? ...because, the point of your article is... 'people are breaking the rules, so what does it matter? Get used to it.' 'if you can't beat them, join them' cowardly, no? ...and maybe it's more than luck that we didn't follow that phrase against the nazis. 'if you can't beat them, join them' Is that really a good rule of thumb? Just give in. Your final lines say it all... let's throw morals out of the window and just let teams (companies) behave how they like. I'm not sure what sport you want to be watching in five or ten years time, but it's definitely not the same one as I'd like to watch. Good luck with supporting Liverpool. You've kind of given yourself away there, because it's always so very easy to be on the inside, pissing out. I actually DO feel sorry for Crystal Palace over the Bostock saga. I don't particularly like Simon Jordan, but I felt for him. That said, the alleged 'robbery' of Bostock was conducted within the rules. 'part of the game' I'm sorry... and I really am, because I don't actually want to be nasty in any way, but you're an absolute idiot. You really are a grade-A, vacuous idiot. I don't say that to directly insult you... I just think you must actually be a genuine idiot. I'm sat here aghast, but at the same time, I really DON'T want you to take that personally... I just wish you'd actually reconsider what you've written, perhaps re-read, then published as an article. It's beyond belief. The fact you've presented it in a semi-articulate way doesn't raise it above the most nonsensical rubbish that you'd hear from a very boring pub fool. Even if you're riled by this comment, or it makes you dislike me immensely, I'd still ask you put that aside and to reconsider what you've written. It's not about which team you or I support or which of us benefits more, it's about the health and morality of a sport which is declining and sickening very quickly.
