FanCast columnist Jim McKendry is delighted that Harry Redknapp has finally
got his hands on some silverware.
If there was a man in football more deserving of a cup final
success than Harry Redknapp, then I haven't met them. One of the games great characters,
a dying breed in the modern era, has seen one of the rollercoaster seasons of
his life end in triumph and I generally hope that is not the last we see of him
in the game.
In little over three years, Harry has taken Portsmouth from
the brink of relegation, to a Cup final triumph and subsequent European
football. It is a remarkable achievement and the fact that Pompey are now
considered a Premier league force in such a short space of time is testament to
his managerial abilities, that are widely understated.
The cup final itself was certainly no spectacle today and very much in keeping with so many over the years. Whether it is players that are overawed, general nerves or the fear of losing, you never see the freedom and cohesion of the players that you normally would. A scrappy goal from Kanu was enough to see off a hard working Cardiff side and send Pompey fans into dreamland.
There is no doubt the trip back down the M3 will be sweet tonight and the bars, pubs and clubs down in Portsmouth will be slightly raucous and rightly so. They have waited 69yrs to taste success and it has certainly been long overdue and you really feel that if Harry can keep this squad together, then it maybe the start of something quite special.
Enjoy your night and milk every moment of this success over the summer, it is duly deserved. Raise a glass tonight and toast the Cup win but more importantly your manager, who has had his fair share of heartaches off the pitch. He deserves this success and is living proof that nice people can succeed in this business.
How does it feel to be a Pompey fan today?
