Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders if this could be the season Portsmouth takes the step up to European contenders as Harry Redknapp looks to get busy this summer.

As Portsmouth prepare for European football next season manager Harry Redknapp is preparing a host of summer signings to ensure that his club manage to go the whole distance.

Often teams that are inexperienced in combing football on two fronts - domestically and in Europe - can not cope and fall apart mid season, but Redknapp is making steps to ensure the same does not happen to his Pompey side.

"We are working on a few options and seeing what we can do," Redknapp told The Daily Star.

"It is not a case of looking at one player for each position. We are looking at a few in each area."

So will this be a season of big summer signings at Fratton Park as the FA Cup winners look to improve in the Premier League? Or will this be a typical summer of bargain buys as Harry Redknapp uses his managerial know how to get the best out of players that other clubs are leaving alone?

Peter Crouch is their number one priority, but would the England striker really move from Liverpool to Pompey? Undoubtedly he would be the focal point of the team, but can Portsmouth push for fifth place to secure European football once this campaign is over?

Along with the likes of Everton and Aston Villa, Portsmouth are amongst a few teams with a hope of finishing fifth and testing the resolve of the Big Four.

He says that he is "looking at a few in each area" suggesting that he will once more live up to his wheeler dealer tag, but it time Redknapp bought big to ensure that they do not miss this opportunity to close the gap on the Premier League's elite?

I reckon he needs a bona
I reckon he needs a bona fide 15 to 20 goal scorer up front, a top quality right winger with speed and passing skills, a veteran left winger to cover Krancjar, a playmaker for the centre of the pitch to complement Diarra and as an option to Muntari (Patrick Vieara, even as an old man would do), and a top quality left back/ wing back with agility. If he gets the whole list and a few throw ins for cover (such as Nobby Solano and perhaps a Harry Kewell type of player), then the top 4 had better watch their backs. The current Pompey crew are talented enough but didn't have time to gel last season. This year, with the right additions, will be a different story. PLAY UP POMPEY !
