columnist Amro Hassan begins his search of the top African
talent, plying their trade in Europe's top League - today's focus is Portsmouth
midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari.
If there is one thing you can guarantee about Harry Redknapp,
is that he certainly has an eye for a player. He is one of the few managers in
the English game who has taken a real chance with African talent, with many
playing a big part in their heroics this season - one player who has made a
huge impact this campaign is Ghanaian international Sulley Ali Muntari.
Sulley Muntari first came to the World's notice at the tender
age of 16, where he was a regular in the Ghana U21 team that finished runners
up in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. His performances in the
tournament earned the young Ghanaian a move to Serie A side Udinese, who
provided the player with the perfect grounding and where he became one of
Europe's most sought after young stars. The 2006 World Cup saw the player come
of an age and the player was in demand by both Milan and Juventus, before
declaring to stay at Udinese as he was hankering for a move to the Premier
League.
At 24yrs of age, Muntari has more than proved himself. Despite his relative young age he has gained a huge amount of experience and, as this season at Portsmouth has shown, the player has proven he can play at a high level in Europe's top Leagues. Internationally he has an excellent record of 11 goals in 38 games, from midfield, and is extremely adaptable and played a variety of roles across the middle.
Sulley Muntari has proved to be one of the Premier League's signings of the season. After an initial slow start on the South Coast he has started to show the kind of form that made Harry Redknapp spend a whole year chasing his signature. The Pompey boss said, "He has got everything you need to play in the Premiership. He is strong and aggressive and talented." There were rumours that the player had attracted interest from Liverpool in the January window, however Harry kept his man and the player played a huge part this season to help Portsmouth finish 8th and of course win their first FA Cup since 1939.
After playing in Serie A, the Premiership, Champions League, UEFA Cup and the youth and senior World Cups; Muntari definitely has the quality to help Portsmouth move forward to the next level and experience will undoubtedly help Pompey in their European campaign next season.
