Football FanCast columnist Daniel Lomax looks at the runners and
riders to replace Carlos Queiroz at Manchester United.
With news that Carlos Queiroz has been named Portugal boss to replace Luiz
Felipe Scolari, who will be his replacement? United manager Sir Alex
Ferguson will have to act quickly if he is to get Manchester United off to a
flyer in the forthcoming campaign, with United's pre-season currently in
turmoil. Surely Ferguson will have a replacement in mind already, one that
will have undoubtedly already been approached, but who would be the ideal
candidate?
From a personal point of view, United would be well suited to appoint
someone who already has ties with Ferguson as this will help the transition
become as smooth as possible. With United entering a key season on the pitch,
they will hope that they can keep everything running smoothly off it- without
any complications.
There are many names in the frame to be Fergie's understudy including a certain Eric Cantona. Given that ‘Le God' has not had much coaching experience (unless we count him helping train the French beach soccer team recently) he will probably be overlooked for the role, although many pundits have suggested that he would jump at the chance to revive his football career- at a club which he holds close to his heart.
Another name in the offing is Brian McClair, who currently works with the youth players at the club, and he certainly has the credentials to aid Ferguson with his task of defending the Premier League and European Cup trophies. McClair, who signed for United back in 1987 and who has previously been assistant manager at Blackburn Rovers in 1998, would be keen to progress within the club and maybe push himself forward as a managerial candidate once Ferguson retires.
Mike Phelan, who is also a member of Ferguson's coaching team, will have a shot at the assistant manager role at United. Phelan has been first team coach since 2001 and has played for both United and England in the past. His tactical knowledge and training methods will leave him in good stead.
Who would you like to see as Ferguson's understudy? Will he please the fans and bring back Cantona or play safe and pick somebody with the necessary experience?
