columnist Rob Facey argues that Man City cant simply
congratulate themselves on almost signing Ronaldinho, they must carry on
thinking big if they are to succeed under Mark Hughes.
As Man City begin their latest chapter with ex-Red Devil Mark
Hughes at the helm, it remains to be seen whether or not the club will be
involved in any more transfers this summer.
After an audacious bid for Ronaldinho ended in failure,
ultimately to a club that offered Barcelona less cash than the Premier League side,
if City really want to excel and grow into a genuine contender for European
football then the money that was to be used to lure the Brazilian should not
merely be put back in the bank.
For most neutrals, Man City remain a popular top flight team. Most fans can't quite understand the whole Eriksson debacle at the end of last season but most hope that the blue side of Manchester continue to grow for the good of the Premier League. Not least the already long suffering fans of City who after years of promotion and relegation now find themselves with buckets of cash.
Jo, one Brazilian striker has already been brought to the club, but the ambition shown by the club can not simply fade after they lost out. Hughes has already said that he is proud of the fact the club were genuinely close to signing a player of such calibre, but rather than patting themselves on the back, the City board need to continue their search.
"I think we have shown a willingness to bring Ronaldinho here and should be complimented for that," Hughes said and yes, they should be complimented, but they'd be complimented even more if they put their money where their mouth is and signed big again.
That is what the owner wants; big players to get more bums on seats. He won't get bums on seats by looking mournful and talking about what could have been.
The fact that the money was available for Ronaldinho means that the board are prepared to spend if they think it's a good idea. It is now up to Hughes and his coaching staff to convince those with the cheque books that there are other players out there that can do a job at Eastlands.
