Football FanCast columnist Jim McKendry looks at two Liverpool Legends and wonders why they have failed to set the International scene alight.

If there are two players who will certainly get inducted in the Premier League hall of fame at some point in their lifetime, then it has to be Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. They are two of my favourite players and the real heartbeat of that Liverpool side and both would run through the proverbial brick walls for the cause. I don't where both players will rank in their great club illustrious history but I'm guessing they have already done enough to be considered among the best.

For all their endeavours at club level the one thing that has really grated me for a long time, as an England fan, is that both players have failed to replicate their massive influence from club form to the International stage. I appreciate that there is a great deal of circumstance that surround Jamie Carragher, a player who was never given a fair run in the side in and I for one fully understand his decision to step down. I guess we will never really know if JC could have become the accomplished international that many thought he could be - was he merely a victim of his own versatility?

Steven Gerrard has always been a source of frustration for me in the International arena. He is without doubt the best central midfielder in this country and probably the best we have produced in a long time. He has no weaknesses to his game and should be the bedrock of which the England time be built around. It just doesn't happen and I wonder what Liverpool fans attribute it to? You see him on a weekly basis, so what is the reason? Is it possible like JC that Steven Gerrard is far too versatile and is affected by constantly being put in different roles? Has he been affected by the fact that the national manager feels that Frank Lampard must play in midfield? How will Fabio Capello get the best out of Steven Gerrard in the future?

It is the debate "Why do Liverpool stars fail to perform for England" that will be discussed on the WKD Sports Shed show on Nuts TV, so submit your vote and comment and get your opinion seen by many.

They are never played in the correct position so how can you get the best out of them. Carra should have been the mainstay of that defence for years.

You already addressed the
You already addressed the point about why Jamie Carragher didn't become a mainstay of the England defence - versatility. He was constantly on the bench as a backup and had players like Wes Brown picked ahead of him for his preferred position, which (although this shouldn't happen) probably influenced his desire to play for England. I'm unsure myself if Carragher really would have been a true world class defender as most Liverpool fans would suggest - and don't get me wrong, I am most definitely one of them - I just think he doesn't have the awareness of defenders such as Terry (leave Ferdinand out of this...I fail to see how he has so much admiration from the footballing world when it's plain to see that when he loses his pace in a year or two that he'll be a shadow of the defender he is now). It's become all too obvious that Carragher is incapable of picking a forward pass and I think this may have affected his England chances; and rightly so. As for Gerrard, you have to question his job for a lot of the games he's supposedly played poorly in. A lot of the time he'd been shackled in order to let Lampard stand on the edge of the 18 yard box all game and hit anything that comes near him. Other times (read: More recently), he's been played in his "Liverpool role", namely a supporting striker. Gerrard is neither of these players. Liverpool have and always will give Gerrard free licence to run about the pitch doing whatever he feels like and that's what England should do as well. The only problem is that the "free role" is most easily accomodated by putting him in the "support striker" role - and that's fine. However, Gerrard doesn't have Torres in front of him when he plays for England, he has Rooney. Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to criticise Rooney in any way, I think he's a brilliant player, however, he's not a proper striker and is seemingly incapable and/or wasted playing up top on his own. England would benefit greatly from adopting Liverpool's little formation of playing 2 defensive midfielders to control play (Barry & Hargreaves?) ahead of 3 attacking midfielders-cum-forwards (Young/Gerrard/Rooney?) ahead of one "solitary" striker (No idea...Crouch?). That might get the best out of quite a few of the players that are so-called "underperformers". tl;dr Gerrard played out of position, Carragher too versatile.
