What is Liverpool's best solution to their No.7 conundrum?

Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone looks at the conundrum facing Rafa Benitez in finding the best complement for Fernando Torres.

If there was shirt numbers that could have retired over the years at Anfield, then it is the most definitely 7 & 9. Such has been the array of talents that have put on the fabled shirts over the years from Keegan, Dalglish, Rush, Fowler and now of course Fernando Torres. With the number now comes pressure, an added expectation and with No.9 in very safe hands with El Nino, it is vital that Rafa fills the No.7 with similar aplomb.

So who should we bring in to fill it? It is a debate that is doing the rounds on Liverpool forums and websites alike. Does Rafa go out and get an out and out striker to partner Torres or does he look for someone in the mould of David Silva, Ricardo Quaresma or a Robbie Keane; who although a striker is equally adept at playing in the hole behind the front man. It is certainly a massive conundrum facing the Spaniard and for me has no definitive answer.

The reason for my indecision is that although I feel an extra striker would certainly take some of the burden off Fernando Torres; I wouldn't want to change the formation that Rafa introduced last season. The 4-4-1-1 yielded excellent results and brought about getting the best out of Fernando Torres and equally it found the perfect role of Steven Gerrard. The Spaniard excelled in the freedom he found in the attacking third and I just feel a partner will hold him back. People talked of the great partnership he had with David Villa, but I certainly didn't witness the same Fernando Torres that I saw on a fortnightly basis at Anfield. He seemed isolated at times as Villa excelled and acted as the leading front man. Rafa must gear the whole team around him, so the player can excel to even greater heights next season.

So who do you think we should bring in to fill the fabled No.7 shirt? An out and out striker like Villa - a dynamic attacking midfielder like Silva or a striker that can play in the hole, like a Robbie Keane?

Keane without doubt must be

Keane without doubt must be the best solution, a real class act who offers us great flexibility in attack.

Keane would be the best

Keane would be the best partner for Torres, agree about him and Villa. A lot was made about there great partnership together but I felt Torres was left out in the shade and only came into his own in the final when Villa was out.

Villa any day of the week,

Villa any day of the week, the others arent a patch on him.

Lets Hope its Robbie Keane.

Lets Hope its Robbie Keane. Being realistic. Villa would have been an option prior to the Championships. Now however, he's out of our price margin. Keane is a player of the same capability and will give us as well as torres far more options going forward. Either way, i think we're all agreed that our targets of late have vastly improved from the Houllier days. So this can only be a promising sign. With the shortlist Rafa has drawn up, we can only give our spanish waiter the faith he deserves. YNWA.

It has to be David Silva,

It has to be David Silva, WORLD class

DAVID SILVA, all day every

DAVID SILVA, all day every day

It will be Keane at No 7 and

It will be Keane at No 7 and Silva on the right / left of the front 3 midfield. Barry on the left of the holding 2 midfield. In with chance this year for number 19. YNWA

you didnt see the same

you didnt see the same torres when he played with villa for spain because they play a different system. if you don't understand the technical and tactical aspects of the game, you obviously can't see anything and therefore shouldn't jump to any conclusions. that said, villa silva would be a great addition because the opposing defenses now have to key into 3 offensive threats (2 primary, 1 secondary) instead of the present singular primary and secondary threat. liverpool suffered last season because it came up with a whole string of draws AFTER agger and then alonso got injured. the loss of agger hurt the team most, because it cost them at least 2 losses (with sami h deputizing). most critically, liverpool suffered last season because of the tactical ineptitude of rafa benitez. the stats speak for itself: he is excellent only at 2nd / repeat games; his record against the top teams and cup teams in the first of the round-robins is atrocious. why the board didn't fire him is beyond me. need proof? porto, besiktas, marseille, chelsea, and what about the two freshmen english squads liverpool played in the cups. also, that stupid rotation policy took the in-form players out of their strides. liverpool will never win as long as it has this useless coach. how many times have we seen the camera on him looking panicky and lost? most

Franck Ribery, Diego or

Franck Ribery, Diego or Sergio Aguero
