Wells feels that this
Liverpool side is two full backs away from a Championship winning side.
I'm sure there isn't a Liverpool fan out there that
hasn't got the wryest of smiles across their faces this morning. Who can blame
them - yesterday's second half performance and result did little else but make
the Premier League take note that this Liverpool side is going places and a
title challenge that once seemed unrealistic, could now be a guaranteed
certainty.
I had the great pleasure of being at Eastlands
yesterday and witnessed Liverpool for the first time this season. There seems a
passion about this team, a real fire in the belly and a look of champions that
has been missing for some time. It is great for English football to see them
back challenging and I certainly feel with a couple of new additions in January
that they could potentially go all the way. I still feel Liverpool is
desperately short at full back and despite the arrivals of Dossena and Degen -
it is an area that needs to be addressed.
One look at Liverpool's goals against record suggests that the club have little to worry about defensively and my disapproval of the full backs certainly isn't pinpointed at them here. One of the great criticisms levied is the apparent lack of width within the Liverpool team, but Rafa's system dictates that the full backs are the ones who should provide this and be continually overlapping the midfield - this doesn't happen regularly enough and that is why Rafa Benitez must go out and find the balance with those who can successfully provide both.
If I was the Spaniard then I would certainly be taking a look at events at White Hart Lane and the current crisis that seems to be inflicting them there. It is a very unhappy ship in North London and unless results dramatically improve and quick, then there is likely to be a few possible deserters as early January. Quite why Spurs are struggling is a mystery to all, but what they do possess are two of the finest attacking full backs in the country, in Gareth Bale and Scottish international Alan Hutton. Those two players in this current Liverpool line-up would simply be an awesome prospect and would certainly justify too many supporters of why Rafa isn't concerned in bringing in out and out wingers to the side for the fear of unbalancing the current system. I couldn't foresee the duo costing anymore than £20m and if Hicks and Gillett want this football club to succeed then they shouldn't think twice to find the money to stump up for the duo - I honestly believe that is all this current Liverpool side is missing.
