Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone is in no doubt that Liverpool need to sign a winger this summer and has compiled his short list.

If there is one thing that has become abundantly clear about Liverpool in the past few years is that we have continually lacked natural width.
It has certainly not been the want of trying and over the years we have seen many attempts to fill the void, but to no avail and we are constantly left to make do with makeshift alternatives like Stevie G or in recent months Dirk Kuyt. It has been holding us back that is without question and it is high time that Liverpool sorted out if we want to move on to the desired level.

It is clear our inefficiencies haven't been lost on the press who have made it their duty to link us to every known winger in Europe and to be honest it has gone from the sublime to the absolute ridiculous. For every Ricardo Quaresma, we have a James Milner and for every David Silva, we have an Aaron Lennon, I suppose if the media fire enough bullets then one of them is bound to hit.

Rafael van der Vaart

Ricardo Quaresma

David Silva

There is no question for me that these are the three outstanding candidates, who could finally provide us with some much needed width. We need the flair, the creativity and more importantly the type of player who can unlock the tightest of defence with a moment of brilliance and produce the necessary ammunition for Fernando Torres - who is the best option and the most likely to wearing the red of Liverpool, next season?

Van der Vaart is the best
Van der Vaart is the best and the most available - quality player and we should have signed him years ago.

David Silva knows Torres
David Silva knows Torres game inside and out and he would be the best alternative, no question.

I would have said Quaresma
I would have said Quaresma before i saw the footbage of van der Vaart, sheer class and as your man says will be a cheaper option.

Silva would be a great
Silva would be a great addition. Van der vart is an excellent midfielder but what Liverpool needs is a Winger, someone like Silva to keep the players moving faster down the flakes. Quaresma might be a good player but why risk buying him when we already saw him play like **** for Barca and Portugal.

I agree with Al. The whole
I agree with Al. The whole article is about adding width with a winger. As classy as Van der Vaart is, he is a creative central midfielder, where we have Gerrard, Alonso and (dare I say it) potentially Barry to do a job (as well has Mascherano, Lucas etc etc). Quaresma has got plenty of talent and fits the role of an attacking winger that will give us width and has a bag full of tricks, but quite simply he seeems like an absolute arrogant wa**er! I don't think he would fit the squad and/or Benitez. Silva is our man surely! He has the skills, he runs the wings and he has a strong understanding with The man Torres. He is still young and seems to have the right attitude. What more can you ask for? Get Silva in Rafa!! YNWA

Van der Vaart for me -
Van der Vaart for me - class, quality, good at ball control, passing and free kicks (what we mostly lack). Silva more of a workhorse - great workrate (a refined Kuyt). Quaresima - we don't need dribblers who keep dribbling just for the fun of it. We need dribbles but mostly passers and free kick takers.

Whist I agree that van der
Whist I agree that van der Vaart is a fantastic player. I don't see how he could add the needed natural width to a team, he clearly is a central attacking player. Silva seems more consistent than Quaresma who's attitude could be a cause for concern. With an already large Spanish contingent I would opt for Silva as he would have more advantage in settling to life at Liverpool.

I'd prefer Van Der Vaart but
I'd prefer Van Der Vaart but I personally would be delighted to have any of these three as I'm fearing that we will end up like every summer. We are linked with top-class players and we end up getting a Yossi Benayoun. Hope not.

Van der vaart is simply
Van der vaart is simply briliant!!! but Liverpool don't need anymore central attacking midfileders. They have Gerrard, macherano, Alonso(but for how long).... top priority should be to get some one with flair to play down the wings,,, quaresma and silva great players!!! but what about a worldclass striker!!! yea we have fernando torres but who else is gonna score??? kuyt rarely... crouchie is gonna go and rafa is stupid for that!!! All this pressure is gonna be on Torres and we need someone strong and who can score goals up front and support torres!!!!
