Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey thinks that Benitez is sensible in waiting for FIFA's ‘6+5' rule to be clarified before he makes his move in the transfer market.

A key FIFA vote will take place on May 29 that could change the face of world football and in particular the Premier League. Officials will meet to discuss the legality and likelihood of Sepp Blatter's plans that each team must field six players who are able to represent the country they play in coming to fruition.

Liverpool will be one of the most heavily affected Premier League teams if the ‘6+5' rules come into place but Benitez is still planning on selling Englishmen Peter Crouch and Jermaine Pennant in order to rebuild his squad.

"We know they have been playing well and a lot of clubs are interested in them so we will wait and see," Benitez told The Guardian.

"We know the rules and we will try to do things whatever happens with FIFA."

The club is linked with Gareth Barry and David Bentley but if a deal is not concluded and then these new rules do come into place it is likely that the prices of domestic players will soar.

Benitez criticised the new proposals and thinks that the golden era of local boys coming good is consigned to history, despite local lads Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard his two most influential players.

"I feel the key is for the fans to see the best players on the pitch.

"It is clear - in the past you would talk about a lot of local players but all the teams want to sign players and the best players come from all over the world."

Platini and UEFA strongly oppose the idea, but Blatter is adamant that this will improve the state of international football and top European leagues.

If the ‘6+5' rules do come into place then English players will become prized assets for their clubs, but the Big Four will be highly compromised? What would the further implications be for Premier League clubs be if the rules come into place?

Benitez has voiced his concerns, will the Big Four allow this or will their might come into play? Would it result in a more even playing field, or a more boring league?

The effect would be that the already over valued english players would become even more over valued. I think that would make very difficult for the smaller clubs to compete with. Atleast thats my opinion.

I agree that it isnt ideal
I agree that it isnt ideal as the best players come from all over the world and to have the best league we need the best players. However, I dont think it will make for a dismal league as it means it will no longer be just the "big 4" that have an impact and are challenging for the title. This seasons league was basically the top 2 on their own for a few weeks and that bored me. A little more excitement and twists and turns would be interesting. The rule is an idea but will not be beneficial to Liverpool.
