Football FanCast guest columnist George Mahon reacts to David Moyes comments about Leon Osman and wonders why he fails to get the recognition he deserves.
There is no doubting that it has been a fantastic season for Everton and after Villa's 2-0 collapse today has more than assured the Merseysiders of a much deserved 5th place finish.
It is just rewards for David Moyes who have been in and around the higher reaches of the Premier League all season and there have been some outstanding performers who have really raised their profile. Joleon Lescott has been a colossus; Phil Jagilelka has made the step up from the Championship with incredible ease while Yakubu has more than justified his price tag.
Moyes has been extremely satisfied with a job well done this campaign and today in the Sporting Life paid particular tribute to Everton's unsung hero and a player who deserves far greater recognition than is otherwise evident.
David Moyes said:
"We have always thought he is a really good player,
"He is a real good team player, he is getting much better and he is relishing it. He has been in the team now for five or six years now and is really thriving.
"Leon can play several roles for us, never bothers and just gets on with his job and for me he is a really good team player.
"He is one of our own boys, has earned a new contract by his form and has played in several different positions so that is why he is a valuable member of the squad."
Moyes was asked whether the 26-year-old could be a future Everton captain.
"He could well be,
"He has a lot of things going for him. He has a big heart, great ability and works very hard for the team."
So it begs the question as to why Leon Osman fails to get the recognition he deserves. Surely he is good enough to be in the International squad? Is Ossie a future Everton captain in the making? Given recent criticisms of late of Carsley and Neville, should Moyes give Ossie the lead role in their quest to break into the top four next season?
