Football FanCast guest columnist Jim Bates reacts to the news that David Moyes is considering a third loan move for Manuel Fernandes; a player that completely perplexes him.

If there is one thing that I will praise David Moyes for, during his years in office at Goodison Park, is he has an eye for a bargain. Whether it is raids on the Championship, Bundesliga or whatever country in the World, he seems to find these little gems.

Pienaar, Lescott, Jagieka, Arteta and Cahill are all examples of the Scots masterful judgment of players, who have all gone on to prove their worth and become an integral part of what is becoming a successful era for the club. Of course the reason for this success is that they are all hungry footballers and Moyes always tends to move for players who have fallen out of favour or who are primed for a possible step up to the Premier League.

It is a policy that will always continue why funds continue to be scarce at Goodison Park and once again this morning it looks as if Moyes is planning a third loan spell for Manuel Fernandes. I have to say that I am extremely perplexed by this move because with the exception of his first few months at the club, during his first spell, he has been a player that for me has flattered to deceive. In games he seems to go from the sublime to the ridiculous and his inconsistency drives me crazy. I talk to a lot of Evertonians who talk about the lad's potential but for me I really can't see it. What is also of concern to me is the fact he went and joined Valencia last summer and supposedly turned us down. Whether it was down to funds, third party ownership - I just don't feel the player puts a shift in on the park nor has the commitment for the club.

Moyes seems to think that despite a shaky start the Portuguese star may have turned a corner and will consider a third loan spell, speaking to Setanta:

"Fernandes' form towards the end of the season was much improved. He has got better, he passed the ball well. Much like last season when he arrived and got better as things went along," said Moyes.

"He certainly looked in better shape, physically, than he did when he first came (in January). We are going to assess his situation over the coming weeks.

"I have got a few ideas of what I want to do with him. It will happen in time."

Should David Moyes be really entertaining a move for Fernandes and is he really what we need? If the Scot really rates him then should he be moving heaven and earth to get him signed on a permanent deal? Should the club be looking to move for someone like Andrei Arshavin? Am I the only Evertonian who has doubts about Manuel Fernandes and whether he has all the right attributes for Everton football club?

I think we should sign him

I think we should sign him he is a very good player and with a full pre season under his belt he will be the playwer we first signed last season, however i would still light sign properly instead of on loan he has a great future and moyes we get the best from him

Anybody who watched the game

Anybody who watched the game vs Newcastle last Sunday should be in no doubt regarding this lad's class. He gives us vision on the floor and reads the game as well as Pienaar does. His set-pieces put Arteta's to shame and he finally gives us a midfielder who is not afraid to shoot from distance. Admittedly his workrate is in question occassionally, but the same can be levelled at Yakubu and i wouldnt want to lose him!!! So, whilst i wouldnt entertain spending £12m on him, a season long loan looks to be a win-win situation as i believe that with an Everton pre-season under his belt and a sustained injury free spell in the team (remember he has only has two short loan spells at EFC) Fernandes will be a quality addition to Everton...

I dont think we should pay

I dont think we should pay the £12m for him. But the problem I have with these loan deals that if they do well then the chances are they will move elsewhere. He has turned down once before so who is to say he won't do it again.

the lad ran the game vs

the lad ran the game vs Newcastle and his set piece delivery puts arteta's to shame/

He didnt turn us down it was

He didnt turn us down it was coz of the third party ownership [*@!$] which the FA wudnt allow so he left for Valencia

Unless we can buy him now

Unless we can buy him now for a cut price (6M), we'll probably never get him signed. The problem Moyes has is that if Fernandes does come back for a 3rd season on loan and he has an amazing season, his price tag will likely go over 12M. I guess if he's a flop we'll not lose out on money, so we might as well see if we can get him for one last season. It's clear he has ability, and I agree that with a proper pre-season under his belt he'd put the shifts in but if I was Moyes I'd be looking to get him signed on a good deal now rather than later.

I agree..Artetas set pieces

I agree..Artetas set pieces are nothing complared to Fernades'

loan deals and moyes go

loan deals and moyes go handin hand, he is a very clever negotiatior. he always places a claus in the contract for option to buy. YOBO had the claus, and so did STEVIE P., he loans them, sees if they fit, then gets a bargain for a player who may have been under performing at his previous club, but suits the premier and EVERTON !!!

One word Newcastle...if you

One word Newcastle...if you were there you would see...the article is awful...what have we got to loose ...the boy is class...raw i admit...but class. If you knew anything about football you would see it.

It makes me cry that

It makes me cry that Evertonians question whether we should be trying to get hold of Manny. He is the type of player that used to be an Evertonian birthright. Quality on the ball, inspiration and class. Unfortunately it seems that the horrors of the 90s have left an indelible scar on a lot of blues who believ in perspiration above all else. Let us not forget that there were some blues who have said we should not sign Arteta after his loan expired, that we should sell Cahill because he doesn't bring that much to the team and there are still some people who question the logic of giving Pienaar a contract after he enjoyed a season in which he was our top goal provider. At the end of the day, Moyes has had him on loan twice before because he knows we lack the funds for a permanent transfer. He knows what he can bring to the team now and what he can bring in the future. That is good enough for me and it should be good enough for you.
