Andy Davies looks ahead to the play-offs this weekend and wonders who has was it
takes to make it to the Premier League.
This weekend signals the start of the Championship play-offs
and for many of the players involved, it will be the biggest games they have
ever played in. All of their good work in the season comes to just two games
where they fight for a place in the final and the prize of winning in
promotion, but which two teams will progress to the final?
It is early to predict as it is a two-legged match and
nothing will be decided on the weekend unless one of the teams get stuffed 5-0.
I remember in the League One play offs last season, Yeovil were beaten 2-0 at
home to Nottingham Forest, only to go and beat them 5-2 at the City Ground.
These games can be very unpredictable with so much at stake some players will
thrive under the pressure, while others will go into hiding. Who will be the
key players for the four teams?
Most people predict whoever goes into the play-offs in the best run of form are likely to be the favourites, so unsurprisingly Crystal Palace have been made favourites. Out of the four teams there form has been nothing short of fantastic over the second half of the season. Neil Warnock has managed to turn his team of youngsters around from being relegation strugglers to play-off contenders. As a manager he has won six times in the play-offs, which is quite a record and he has never lost at Wembley. Warnock has already begun the mind games saying the team has already exceeded their expectations as no one had given them a chance of getting into the top six after their poor start to the season.
The same could be applied to Bristol City who at the beginning of the season was not thought of serious contenders for promotion and the team have proved the doubters wrong. Yes there was disappointment after missing out on automatic promotion after being top of the league in March, but we have rediscovered our form with a good performance against Sheffield United and we got back to scoring goals with 3-0 win over Preston last weekend. I believe the team are coming into form at just the right time and perhaps Lee Trundle will continue the form he showed on Saturday with another good performance against Palace. If he could score a few goals in the next two games, then he will have proved his doubters wrong.
In the other semi final, Watford face Hull at Vicarage Road on Sunday and this is as equally unpredictable. At the start of the campaign Watford were leading the way at the top of the league, but they could not sustain this good form and in recent weeks it looked like they might slip out of the top six altogether with their poor run of results. Their home form this season has not been the best and it wouldn't surprise me if Hull could nick a result there. Hull themselves have had a fantastic season and will count themselves a little unfortunate not snatch second place, but Phil Brown's team are more than capable of winning the play offs with on loan Manchester United striker Frazier Campbell and veteran striker Dean Windass.
The bookmakers make Palace the favourites followed by Hull and Watford, with Bristol City being made the underdogs again, hopefully this will work in our favour.
