Football FanCast columnist Rob
Facey reacts to Birmingham City's drubbing in the derby and wonders if it
will have any lasting effect on Alex McLeish's side.
Alex McLeish
remains confident that his Birmingham City side can avoid the drop despite
their drubbing at the hands of local rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.
The Birmingham
manager is looking at the next three fixtures against Liverpool, Fulham and
Blackburn although he admits that morale is low after their opponents five star
performance which left them chasing shadows at Villa Park.
"I am sure the players feel as bad as myself and the fans, because the dressing room is silent," McLeish told The Guardian.
"But we knew it would come down to the last three games whether we lost by one or five goals here.
"We have now got to see if there will be a reaction next week.
"What has been evident from this side is that we have bounced back from defeat. We can do it again, because the proof is already there."
Many Birmingham fans avoided complete humiliation at the hands of their local rivals and left Villa Park early, but McLeish has urged supporters to get behind the team.
"We need the fans to stay with us the next three games, starting next week against Liverpool at St Andrew's, where we have done very well."
So, has this rout consigned Birmingham to the Championship? They are only a point of Bolton but will this derby demolition have a lasting impact? And what about the reaction of Mauro Zarate after being substituted - surely not the attitude needed when you're in a relegation dogfight?
