FanCast columnist Jerome
Johnstone wonders if it will actually be a bad thing to
scrap the transfer market.
You may love or loath Arsene Wenger, but you definitely
respect him. The Frenchman is one of the games visionaries and when he makes
statements, you tend to stand up and take notice. His views this morning that
we are heading for a meltdown within the transfer market may seem somewhat farfetched,
but on closer inspection it is surely only a matter of time.
Arsene Wenger is one of the rarities in football in that he
actually honours a contract. He has principles and strong values, something
which is desperately missing from the modern player and I just wonder if the
Frenchman is right to suggest that going forward; one year contracts will
become something of a common occurrence. What is the point of giving a player a
5yr deal, when he can leave at any given time? We are in a football industry
where player power is ‘King' after all.
There are many sides this arguments and whether the scrapping of the transfer system is good or bad. I can see people's argument against it but the benefits of it are endless and it may bring a bit of value and respect back to the game. If players are fighting for their futures every given season, you will see an end of the lazy footballer - those who sit on their large salaries and show little concern for the cause. Suddenly the psyche of a footballer will change and their once cosy lives, fast cars and big mansions will be threatened.
I appreciate there will be your top end players, who will always earn a nice living but there will be many that won't and have subsequently fight for their lives. I believe it will make football highly competitive once again, which can only be good for us the spectator.
So how do you feel about the current transfer market? Would giving players a one year contract clean up the game of its freeloaders? Will the scrapping of a transfer market bring back respect and value to a game that is in short supply?
Who ever said there was no such thing as the beautiful game?
