Pearson is delighted that Arsenal
has beaten United to Ramsey's signature and wonders if the club will learn from
the mistakes with Walcott and reconsider loaning the player out.
If there is one thing that has amused me in the past few days
is the thought of Sir Alex Ferguson getting that phone call informing him that
Aaron Ramsey has decided to choose Arsenal. You can just imagine the face
getting redder, the expletives blurted out and the realisation that in the same
week that the Scot talked about his great disappointment of Gascoigne slipping
his net; once again a North London club has moved in and taken away the prize
catch.
Full credit must go to Arsene Wenger who showed such class in
organising the private jet, to bring Ramsey and his family over to Switzerland
for talks. What 17yr old would fail to be impressed and the ‘professor' has
shown, much to Fergie's no doubt rage, that the human touch has clearly won the
day.
So how do Arsenal fans feel about Ramsey? I have to say that once the laughter had died down at the fact the player - who was always going to join United and every man and his dog telling him that was the right move - was going to choose North London, it got me wondering at what the best policy will be next season. According to reports this morning Arsenal have apparently refused Cardiff's request to take him back on loan and the player will become an integral part of the first team squad. Is this the right move with Ramsey and will he really get many games next season?
I will be honest that I don't know much about Ramsey and like a lot of people, the only action I have seen were fleeting appearances in the FA Cup last year. It was much the same with Theo Walcott and I was equally shocked when we secured his signature, but the kid comes with a huge reputation and the fact that the two biggest clubs in England are vying for his signature, shows he has ability. I just wonder if we should learn from what I believe were mistakes initially with Walcott and send the Welshman out on loan for the season - not necessarily Cardiff, but somewhere he will get plenty of first team football under his belt.
Theo Walcott is slowly finding his feet at Arsenal and it has been a tough time for him and I for one am glad to see he is finally coming through. I can understand Wenger's reluctance in sending him out on loan, given the size of the fee, but I wonder if the overprotection had delayed the player's progress. Reserve team football clearly isn't a better grounding than playing regularly in a competitive league and I wonder if it would be wise to learn from the mistakes with Walcott and loan Ramsey out.
