Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey looks at the thinning Arsenal midfield and asks, once again, whether Arsene Wenger just needs to bite the bullet and buy a player who does not need years of mentoring and development.

After Hleb finally arrived at the Nou Camp yesterday, his former boss seemed indifferent after losing a player that was once expected to produce so much.

"We are comfortable with our decision to let him go and we are all looking forward to continuing our preparations for the new season ahead," Wenger said, as reported in The Guardian.

However, Arsenal's preparations for the season ahead seem to revolve around losing as many midfielders as possible.

Despite signing Hleb's replacement last week in Samir Nasri, there is still a nagging doubt that Wenger needs to do more this season. Nasri, despite only brief appearances at Euro 2008, did little to get Arsenal fans salivating in the same way as his ‘New Zidane' tag does. No doubt they will point out that he is one for the future, but this is the whole point. Aaron Ramsey, Wenger's other big summer move, is one for the future, but you can't replace a first team player with a hot prospect. It's just a stroke of luck that the players the club do possess are so skilled they often defy their years.

Hleb follows Flamini out of the exit door at Arsenal, with Gilberto Silva expected to seal a switch to Panathinaikos this week which leaves the midfield very vulnerable and in the hands of Fabregas. One of the star performers at Euro 2008 there is no doubting that the Spanish midfielder is a class act, but he is not a player like Lampard or Gerrard who can win Premier League matches with an all-action display. He needs a partner and, for the time being, it is unclear who this will be.

Wenger's transfer policy is notorious but equates to ultimately mixed results. Spending big on young players is not unusual for the Frenchman, but perhaps he should be looking closer to home for players that fit the bill. Xabi Alonso, for instance, unsettled at Liverpool would be a great signing for Arsenal.

He and Fabregas have an understanding from the national team but there is such a slim possibility that Wenger would even consider making a move it is almost as if the manager views buying ready made players as cheating.

Is it not time Wenger, and Arsenal fans, admit that they need players to serve a purpose in the short term?

What a bunch of dorks.
What a bunch of dorks. Wenger doesn't need to buy, he's already earmarked the man for the job. Hleb has been a ball-wasting tosser for three years (coincidentally the period in which we haven't won anything), and Silva is to slow for the premiership. You aren't fit to criticise Wenger, so shut the [*@!$] up.

It is not time for Wenger to
It is not time for Wenger to 'admit' anything. Is it so hard to understand that the transfer window is open for another 6 weeks? What is the point of judging now? Yes, there is room for strengthening. But whose to say that he won't do it? It is also nonsense to suggest that Wenger does not sign players who are ready for the first team. Remember Sagna and Eduardo? But "it's just a stroke of luck that the players the club do possess are so skilled they often defy their years." really takes the biscuit. You're criticising Wenger for signing young players, then call it luck when the stategy works (as it so often does). Why not think before you type?

Rob, your article is a
Rob, your article is a complete farce. Spending big is NOT the answer to winning trophies. During the last 5 years, Arsenal spent a total of £1.60M compared to the likes of Tottenham sitting on #4 (in spending) who spent £58M with Chelsea heading the table with a spending of £260M, followed by Liverpool, 2nd and Manchester Utd in 3rd (£78M) ARSENAL won 2 FA Cups (2003 & 05), an invincible season, and a CL runner up position in 2006. Compare their achievements to clubs who have spent big but gained nothing out of it. For instance, our neighbours, Tottenham FC sitting at 11th position in the league and last year they spent £28M alone out of the total £58M in 5 year period. It is a no brainer, Arsene Wenger knows the job more than you or anyone including the PL bosses. Can anyone emulate his ways and move the club in a progressive manner?

How many of these
How many of these unconstructive misinformed articles are posted a day? "Just a stroke of luck" that the players are skilled and defy their years? Must have been a "stroke of luck" that the team was a win at old trafford away from winning the title last time around. I also reject the idea that Gerrard and Lampard have all action displays that win games in the premiership. For one thing, Gerrard has never won a Premiership title. Lampard is immobile and while being excellent at sniping goals from around the box when they fall to him, he does not possess the quality of vision of Fabregas or his ability to dictate games box to box. Finally, Xabi Alonso is a good player but is not the kind of rabid defensive midfielder hunting down every ball that Arsenal need protecting the back four. The Amy Winehouse video embedded at the end of this article pretty much sums the whole thing up.
