columnist Rob Facey wonders now that Milan have whittled their
shortlist down to one striker, should Arsenal cash in on Adebayor and go on the
hunt for Eto'o and Arshavin?
Fans of Tottenham and Chelsea can breath a sigh of relief
after Milan have confirmed that they are not following up their interest in
either Dimitar Berbatov or Didier Drogba, instead choosing to focus solely on
Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor.
AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has stated that the
Italian club, who will play UEFA Cup football next season after finishing fifth
in Serie A, are in talks with Arsenal about the possibility of recruiting the
Togolese striker who has been ambiguous with regards to his future.
"One single player interests us and that is Emmanuel Adebayor," said Galliani, as reported in The Guardian.
"If he doesn't come, then nobody will come and we will keep the team as it is in attack."
However, it would seem that Wenger and the board are taking their time when it comes to making a decision. As Galliani point out, this could be the Gunners loss should if a fee is unable to be agreed.
"We are in negotiations with Arsenal, who are not willing to sell at the moment," said Galliani.
"We'll see how far we can get with our offer. If the English club still don't want to sell, then too bad."
Arsene Wenger has been adamant in the last week that he has no intention of selling Adebayor, but I wonder if a fee in the region of £30m is an offer just too good to refuse. The Togolese had an excellent season, chipping in with 30 goals but is he really irreplaceable? With Samuel Eto'o being told he is surplus at the Nou Camp and Andrei Arshavin looking to leave Zenit, there are certainly adequate replacements in the market and both at the fraction of the cost that is being offered for Adebayor.
If you could win leagues for having a healthy bank balance, Arsenal would be reigning champions, yet while some Gunners fans bemoan the prudency at the club it does seem a good deal that must be worth considering.
Should Arsenal cash in on Adebayor? Are you in agreement with Wenger that the Togolese striker is vital cog and must be retained at the club next season? If he does move on, who would you like to see replace him?
