Football FanCast
columnist Billy Pearson is
fed up of the constant rumour and speculation around N5 and the apparent double
standards shown by some players.
If there was one common theme that seemed to be drifting out
of the Emirates all season then it is that Thierry Henry's departure had lifted
a real burden off his teammates and galvanised them all to perform. I
personally never understood this as a supporter or comprehend the whole idea
that one player could simply alienate the rest of his teammates. Surely you
look to Henry as one of the finest strikers in Europe and the one man you can
rely on to deliver? I would find that kind of comforting despite any such
feelings or possible loathing for the man. At the end of the day you are paid
money to win trophies for your football club, not make friends - I'm sure
Gallas and Lehmann isn't number one on most Christmas card lists, but you know
they will do a job for you.
I have not written this article in an attempt to blame any
possible failings due to Henry's departure (although
had he been on the end of the chances that Adebayor had this season then his
tally would have been pushing on 50) but more the sheer hypocrisy of the players
who have suddenly become Billy Bighead's overnight. I mean forgive me if I'm
wrong but are the same players who saw Henry as some burden over the football
club, because of his stature, now see themselves as the big cahuna and are now trying
to hold the club to ransom for bigger contracts or threatening to leave.
Arsenal is football club steeped in traditions and one that has always commanded respect, whether it from a neutral fan or the players that have joined. If you look back over the years, I can only think of one player who failed to show the club any real loyalty and that of course was Nicolas Anelka; a decision the player has since regret.
Thierry Henry may not have been liked by some of his peers but he played by the book at Arsenal and showed great loyalty when other clubs came knocking - he understood the club, the fans and there was no way he was going to sell this football club short. It boils my blood that the same players who welcomed his departure are showing the club such little respect. Was it a jealousy factor- did they hate the fact Henry got the headlines? Now they have all had a taste of what to them is probably deemed a success, finishing 3rd in the Premier League, that they have now made it? Could it possibly be they are they merely using fan frustration at the lack of apparent finances as just a way to engineer a move away and therefore create even more animosity and frustration between the board and supporters? It is surely a no lose situation for them.
I just find it incredible and I have really reached the stage where I couldn't care if the likes of Adebayor & Hleb join Flamini out of the door. No player has ever left our football club and improved and I don't expect them to now. I just wonder whether we are going to get similar noises in the summer of players being grateful that Player X & Y have left because they created a bad dressing room vibe. We need players who are fully committed to establishing our club to be the best in Europe, not those who want to use us as a mere stepping stone.
