Football FanCast columnist Billy Pearson feels that a fit Robin Van Persie could have been the difference between winning and losing the Premier League title this season.

When Thierry Henry made, what was considered his dream move to Barcelona, many Arsenal fans were concerned that Wenger hadn't brought in a player of similar ilk. Eduardo was not going to set pulses racing in the eyes of supporters and many felt the Frenchman was gambling with their season.

Wenger not for the first and certainly wouldn't be the last was to be proved right once again and his decision to keep faith with the squad at his disposal almost paid great dividends; in potentially winning the Premier League title and of course has taken them 90mins away from a Champions League semi final.

So much has been reported as the affect on Henry's departure had on the camp as a whole. Fabregas was one player who was vocal in the fact that they felt a burden had been lifted and the squad as a result was freed up. Few would argue that the squad was certainly galvanised as a result, playing the type of dream football we have been accustomed to under Wenger and scoring at will, all over the park.

Emmanuel Adebayor was one player who the press were quick to point out that was now reborn, firmly out of the shadow of Henry and scoring goals freely, however I can't help feel that it was more his strike partner that Wenger had earmarked to takeover the goal scoring baton, not Eduardo but the precocious Dutch talent that is Robin Van Persie.

Van Persie like all good Dutch players have that air of arrogance about them that precedes their ability in which he has in spades. It is clear that the Arsenal forward line didn't need two egos and you kind of felt that Wenger had kept Van Persie in the shade for far too long and needed to unleash him on a regular basis and give him his head. He has obscene abilities with a football, reminiscent of Dennis, with quick feet an excellent touch and absolutely fearless in front of goal. He started the season like a train and along with Fabregas was one of the reasons for our excellent start and scoring on a regular basis. You kind of felt he had seized the moment and firmly the main man, he had found his platform and we were set to benefit.

Since Van Persie arrived from Feyenoord, he has had the most wretched time with injuries. You name it he has had it and they haven't been minor injuries either; it has deprived us of one of the finest young talents in Europe.

Once again the age-old problems have reoccurred this season and after what was his most consistent spell in an Arsenal shirt and Wenger was left to rue his loss, which is far more important than may seem otherwise obvious. Van Persie in the long and short of it is a match winner, make a goal out of nothing and is always a massive threat at set pieces. How many points have we thrown away this season due to our inabilities to kill off the opposition? It has been a massive blow for Wenger who saw the Dutchman as his talisman and the heir to Henry's throne. I firmly believe that a fit Van Persie would have guaranteed us the title this season simply due to his match winning instincts. I'm sure I wasn't the only supporter at the Emirates who whispered a "Here we go again" when Van Persie came off with a thigh injury against Liverpool on Wednesday night, another tragic setback for a player who simply is blessed with atrocious luck.

I hope Robin Van Persie doesn't fall into that nearly list of great players who's potential never gets fulfilled due to injury. I sit back this morning and say those immortal words "If only" - a phrase that will no doubt pass through many a gunners lips when we reflect on this season.

I think you are spot on. Van
I think you are spot on. Van Persie is such a great player and his goalscoring record when fit speaks volumes. There have been games this season where we have absolutely been crying out for someone to produce that spark of magic.

Big player for us that is no
Big player for us that is no question and sorely missed. I fear we will never see the player fulfil his ability and its a grave shame, it affects some players like Whiteside and you can even say King at Spurs.

Van persie is a tremendous
Van persie is a tremendous talent so yeah we have certainly missed him. The problem for me is Wenger should have brought someone in January to replace him for the remainder of the season. Hoping he will return to fitness has proved a huge error and has cost us. I hope Wenger has learnt a valuble lesson here.

Big blow and let down for us
Big blow and let down for us this year. He was the best player early season and was scoring goals for fun and unfortunatly we have missed him. Ade is a good striker but he is extremely wasteful, chances that Persie would feast on.

Not missed as much as
Not missed as much as Rosicky's creativity. How can we have missed a player that has never played 10 games in a row for us?? RVP has never done that so it was never expected. No one expected Rosicky to be out for 4 damn months and that's when the team went sh*te.

Its a fair point about van
Its a fair point about van persie - I cant agree about Rosicky though Franny I think he's highly overrated and his long range shooting is probably all we missed until the Flamster got his radar sorted. I think the real issue here is the squad depth. You couldnt foresee both Rvp and Eduardo getting serious injuries but if Wenger hadnt anticipated Adebayor's form that means he was essentially relying on the other two staying fit all season with a little back-up from Ade and an untested Bendtner who is definitely not ready. That isnt championship winning squad strength. Still, I think there's plenty to be positive about considering we were meant to be scapping with Spuds for 4th at this point.

myth and
myth and straw-clutching this is totally expected and irrelevant. rvp is vastly over-rated. his only relationship to great dutch players is that he is dutch. he palpably does not fit arsenal's style of play. if he'd been int he team all season we would just as likely have less points, not more. you people are deluding yourselves.

When you are buying players
When you are buying players you need to concentrate on two factors in particular. First that they are good enough,or that potentially they may become good enough, and secondly that they have resilience, toughness "balls" in other parlance. In Wenger's case over the past number of years many of Wenger's signings have failed on both counts. Van Persie and Rosicky are two great examples. Both very skillful but you only have to look at them and they get injured. Would Manu and the Chavs have signed either of these two players. Of course not. Come the business end of the season you need toughness in your players in every sense of the word. They are not injury prone. They are woofters who believe that they are injured. These are the kind of players that would break out in spots if they were to leave the dressing room.

I disagree. RVP has talnet ,
I disagree. RVP has talnet , but is no saviour. Not a natural goalscorcer when has he scored 2 or 3 goals on a regular occasion. We need more natural goalscorcers, ADE and BENDTNER are [*@!$] poor players Need someone like JO from cska Moscow

Adebayor is lucky i cant
Adebayor is lucky i cant believe he has scored as much... if he is not offside he is passing the ball to the opposition and has the touch of a R**IST (SORRY HAD TO BE SAID). We need a few world class players that have experience which can shine on our already fantastic youngsters they need propper guidance not that idiot gallas sulking in the middle of the pitch (would tony adams ever do something like that!!!) I am sorry we have been pretty lucky to be where we are and now we have been found out i am so pleased we shut up the papers and will finish 3rd but we have deluded ourselfs into believing the hype and i can assure you if wenger does not buy some top quality players we will never lift the premiership again. The Prem is different now and we need to buy some top players and fook of some of this waste and that includes adebayor, eboue (first out), diaby, gallas, bendtner. replace them with much better players and we will win something keep these idiots and there is no chance! AND SIGN FLAMINI BEFORE HE FOOKS OFF!
