An £8m deal that is not only good for Arsenal but also the player

With Manchester City keen to broker an £8m deal for Kolo Toure, Football FanCast guest columnist Duncan Raine wonders if it's time that Arsenal looked to cash in.

As the Spuds continue to splash their cash and find yet another £15m to sign a striker today, we at Arsenal are left to make do with both manager and club chairman talking about the affects of the current economic climate and how it influences our transfer policy.

I'm certain that I am not the only Arsenal fan who is furious as to why we remain prudent; considering the great wealth's that we pull in from the Emirates. It simply makes a mockery as to why we supposedly needed to move there in the first place and it is clear it has become nothing less than a financial burden- I often wonder if in the last three years we would have remained trophy less had we actually stayed at Highbury.

So cash strapped is seemingly the company line and Wenger is being forced to scrape the barrel in order to bring reinforcements to a club that has seemingly shut up shop already this season and whose greatest challenge this year is to merely retain our status as a Top-4 club. Our title challenge finished long ago and we don't have enough strength in our squad to mount a serious assault on the Champions League, therefore we should use this window to start laying the foundations for next season and bring in players and blood them in, whilst shifting out some deadwood, or should I say those who have outstayed their welcome.

I have to say that I have always been a huge fan of Kolo Toure over the years. One of the invincibles, Kolo in my eyes has been one of our most consistent performers and in my mind should have been given the captains armband when Henry moved to Barca. I honestly believe that mentally Toure hasn't recovered from the snub, especially as it was given to his not so friendly sidekick and we have seen the player's performance level and consistency drop. Toure and Gallas has never looked like the match made in heaven, however I can't help but feel that Wenger sacrificed the wrong player.

Speculation has been rife in the past few weeks that all is not well with the Ivorian. Reports of a training ground bust up with Gallas, followed by an apparent transfer request, and the constant £8m links to Manchester City suggest that Toure feels it is time to move on. I will be sad to see him go, but I really think a clean break is needed by both parties. Arsene has apparently turned down Kolo's request for a move, but I wonder if it is honestly would be a wise move to keep a player whose head is clearly elsewhere. Whether Wenger is merely biding his time and hoping to clinch a £5m+Bendtner swap deal with West Ham for Matt Upson before agreeing to let him go remains to be seen, but for me it is the right move for all parties and in Upson we will have more than an adequate replacement for the Ivorian.

Is it time for Arsenal to cash in on Kolo Toure?

" honestly believe that

" honestly believe that mentally Toure hasn't recovered from the snub, especially as it was given to his not so friendly sidekick and we have seen the player's performance level and consistency drop". I like the way you analysed this complex dressing situation. Unhappy player's performance may drop dramatically and what happened to Kolo is something that I couldn't ever understood. So this is a good point, however, I am not sure about the next point: "Toure and Gallas has never looked like the match made in heaven, however I can't help but feel that Wenger sacrificed the wrong player". I am not sure if sacrificing Kolo is the wrong thing to do from utilitarianism point of view, however, I do agree that sacrificing Kolo is the wrong thing to do from moral point of view as he gave all those years with great determination and motivation. I just don't think that he is better technically than Gallas especially when it comes to airial play which is Arsenal's Achilles' heel. I agree with your last point that a move for Kolo Toure will benefit both parties, especially, that he's reportedly unhappy. Good work bro because this is the only article I see that is written in plain english with good synthesis and in paragraphs unlike other so called 'neutral media' or some so called 'ArsenalFans' who seem to be only interested in negativity whenever they mention Arsenal and Arsene.

the whole point in us moving

the whole point in us moving to the emirates was indeed to bring in more money..........but our loan is being paid off at something like £30m a year. i'm not saying that i'm not frustrated that the club are ignoring the fact we desperately need a dm, but i can see wenger's idea in the money situation. he doesn't want our club to be run by some foreign businessman with no love of football or the club. he wants our club to be able to pay for itself, and be financially independent. if abramovich, or that sheik at man city, pull out, that leaves their respective clubs in danger and debt. and don't just think that someone else will just come in and buy their club.........it is a worldwide recession remember. so, yes...wenger sometimes infuriates us supporters with his stubbornness for buying the players we want.....but he really does have the long-term future of the club in mind. and for that....i thank him. i'd rather have a few bad years, and then something good......than a few good years, and then administration.

Arsenal has money. They have

Arsenal has money. They have over 90 mill in a reserve cash account which is unallocated. Obviously they wouldn’t want to spend all of it but their cash flow is currently the best of any football club in the world. If anyone does not believe what I just said they can Google "Arsenal Financial Statement" and review their public balance sheets. Coupled with the over 12 million they have received from the sale of Hoyte and the sell on clauses for Bentley and Diarra if they spend 25 mil on 2 experienced players that is net of 13 mill. If a club as massive as Arsenal can't afford to spend 12 mill in order to keep their team in the CL and be competitive then we might as well be relegated. Last year we made 50 mill plus off our CL appearances. If we don't make the CL next year that's 50 mill down the drain. DO THE MATHS before you question why we should or should not buy players to reinforce the tea. I have a simple philosophy with regards to the future, “Without no present there will be no future.” In other words, if we don’t maintain a certain standard now, we will never get the opportunity to see what a great future we will have because core players will leave, we will lose money by not getting into the CL, will lose money from merchandising by “fair weather” fans and will find it difficult to compete for top players. The major reason why Arsenal has become so popular worldwide is because we played attractive football and won trophies while doing so. Without that, our fan base will be eroded. The main reason why we can attract the top youngsters and players worldwide is also because we play attractive football and win trophies. Regardless of what Arsene or any Board member will tell you, success breeds greater success and failure breeds even greater failure. To waste such hard work, perseverance and dedication for over 10 years which allowed us to rise to the top would be sheer criminal, especially because of a warped vision and the inability to understand that when Plan A doesn’t work you must go to Plan B.

Patience, as a virtue, truly

Patience, as a virtue, truly appeals to me. Getting over to The Emirates isn't something to be overcome in a hurry. Only an astute manager like Arsene Wenger would have accomplished that without crisis. Sure, every Arsenal fan wants to smile at the end of every match, every championship/competition, every season. Every Arsenal fan, yes but none more than The Proffessor himself. However well I assume to know this game, definitely not up to 1% as much as The Boss does. And believe me, AW has experience longer than a shepherd's upper arm in this sweat business. Almoost all his big money signings turned out flops, especially whenevr they break previous transfer records. Caution is the word especially when going for a player without Premiership experience. Pab at Spurs is still learning the ropes! Arshavin is a great player no doubt but there's no guarrantee of instant success or any success at all and considering the age 27, there wouldn't be much time to wait if he didn't jell. So, let The Boss decide... On Kolo, I've seen great players have one full bad season and come back even better. For a defender, Kolo still got five productive years or more to offer. Sol Campbell is a perfect example of how not to off-load a defender in a hurry! And here again, The Boss has experience and history to guide him. I'll still be alive the day the Great Gunners will win the double again. I'll still be there the day we'll win the CL. But believe me again, we won't grab those in a hurry if we disrupt the structure that keeps this club the envy of all.
