How good is Liverpool really?

Posted by: Micheal McKenna, Fri 9th May 2008
With Torres, Gerrard and possibly Mascherano the only players likely to ever feature in a team of the season, I ask how good are Liverpool. Liverpool have not once contested the Premier League...it has been in existence for 16 years now.Why have Liverpool failed consistently in the league for so long?

I remember a lot of times
I remember a lot of times when Liverpool has topped the league after 10-13 games ... its just a combination of bad luck and the bad work done by souness which made liverpool play catch-up in the late nineties ... but now we are top-drawer

Anyone who can pullout the millions needed can win a premiership liverpool need about 4 world class players to become a premiership winner given luck with injuries is a factor as depth in some areas is a concern.

Liverpool were in contention
Liverpool were in contention for the title in 2001-2002, till Arsenal won all of their last 13 games to seal our fate. Graeme Souness was never as good a manager as he was a player. Liverpool lost ground there, as Manchester United was gaining momentum. We needed a strong manager. The players that were brought in simply weren't good enough to be premiership champions. The club hasn't been marketed the way it ought to have been. Everyone seems to know about Manchester United's achievements, which until recently, were fairly ordinary. I could cite the example here of India, where there are plenty of Manchester United fans, but hardly anyone knows about the club that won 18 first division titles and 5 European cups. The club needed to be marketed better, and football fans around the world made aware of the achievements. The availability of more funds and a world class manager who has tasted success in top flight football (eg. Rafael Benitez) can combine to create a top drawer squad, capable of wining the league. This is not the time to be judging the Liverpool squad. Sir Alex took 6 years to put together his first champion squad. With enough funds (considering most footballers these days are grossly overpriced) the manager can bring in more players of the calibre of Torres. Besides, it would be unfair to ignore Ryan Babel, Pepe Reina (Golden Glove winer for 3 years in a row, in a league that features Petr Cech) and Jamie Carragher (who, according to Franco Baresi, is the best defender in Europe), as potential candidates for the Team of the season. Its just the consistency that's missing and the inability to win games against sides (eg. Birmingham, Reading) that really should be struggling against Liverpool that cost us the league last season. Once this team gels, and players like Babel get used to English football, and with another 2 world class internationals, Liverpool could be in contention within the next 2 years.

Reina and Agger can
Reina and Agger can definitely be included in discussion of Players of the season (Agger was injured pretty much all last season, but there aren't many better than him, trust me!). Babel will be up there sooner than many think. That's 6 players, not including any prospective new signings...

I think we're nearly there,
I think we're nearly there, when you look at the draws against Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan at Anfield games we should have won, it would have been us, Chelsea and United battling for the league. We have a solid foundation for a great team, Reina, Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Mascherano, Gerrard, Babel and Torres are all great players or ready to be great players in the case of Babel and Skrtel, if we get Barry and Silva which are both very realistic then we are looking at a great starting 11 with a lot of attacking intent, we may not win the league but we will be closer and I think we will win a trophy.   Oh yeah and Reina has won the golden gloves 3 times in a row, how does he not make team of the season?

Liverpool's biggest problem
Liverpool's biggest problem is that they play as good as the team they are against.

The promised land is a long
The promised land is a long long way off. Liverpool are deep in debt BEFORE they have built and paid for their new stadium, and financing it is problematic due to the credit crunch; hence they have to sell before they can buy. Perhaps Liverpool will go down the Man Utd. route and simply add to their debt mountain to buy players, hoping that a white knight (DIC?) appears over the horizon.
